USA Shuts Down North Korea's Internet After Sony Hack by ifyclose2(m): 10:11pm On Dec 22, 2014
If you've been following the Sony, North Korea and
the US government saga then you should know what
this is about. But let me give a brief summary
because I'm about to board a flight.

Sony Pictures released a movie called The Interview,
a comedy about a fictional assassination of North
Korean leader, Kim Jong Un.. North Korean didn't
find it funny and hacked into Sony's computers,
rendering thousands of computers inoperable and
forced Sony to take its entire computer network
offline. That wasn't enough, they then threatened
terror attack on US citizens if Sony doesn't cancel
showing the movie, forcing Sony to pull the interview
from theaters and losing almost $200m. Then the US
government got involved and told Sony to go ahead and
release the movie, that they don't take lightly to
threats and promised to retaliate for the attack on
Sony. It looks like they've kept their to promise. North
Korea is currently offline. Lol

"Internet connectivity between North Korea and
the outside world is currently suffering one of
its worst outages in recent memory, suggesting
that the country may be enduring a mass cyber
attack a few days after President Obama warned
the US would launch a "proportional response" to
North Korea's hack against Sony
North Korea, which has four official networks
connecting the country to the Internet -- all of
which route through China -- began experiencing
intermittent problems yesterday and today went
completely black, according to Doug Madory,
director of Internet analysis at Dyn Research in
Hanover, New Hampshire." Bloomberg reports.

I find this so hilarious! Moral of the story, don't mess with the USA.

North Korea experienced sweeping Internet outages for hours before coming back online late Monday. One computer expert said the country's online access was "totally down."

The White House and the State Department declined to say whether the U.S. government was responsible.

President Barack Obama said Friday the U.S. government expected to respond to the hacking of Sony Pictures Entertainment Inc., which he described as an expensive act of "cyber vandalism" that he blamed on North Korea. Obama did not say how the U.S. might respond, and it was not immediately clear if the Internet connectivity problems represented the retribution. The U.S. government regards its offensive cyber operations as highly classified.

"We aren't going to discuss, you know, publicly operational details about the possible response options or comment on those kind of reports in anyway except to say that as we implement our responses, some will be seen, some may not be seen," State Department spokeswoman Marie Harf said.

North Korea has forcefully denied it was responsible for hacking into Sony. But the country has for months condemned the "The Interview," a Sony satirical comedy about a plot to assassinate the North Korean leader. Sony canceled plans to release the movie after a group of hackers made terroristic threats against theaters that planned to show it.

North Korea is one of the least connected countries in the world. Few North Koreans have access to computers, and even those who do are typically able to connect only to a domestic intranet. Though North Korea is equipped for broadband Internet, only a small, approved segment of the population has any access to the World Wide Web. More than a million people, however, are now using mobile phones in North Korea. The network covers most major cities but users cannot call outside the country or receive calls from outside.

North Korean diplomat Kim Song, asked Monday about the Internet attack, told The Associated Press: "I have no information."

Ivan Simonovic, the U.N. assistant secretary-general for human rights, told reporters he didn't want to speculate about the nature of the Internet outages but said he hoped it would be "thoroughly investigated."

Doug Madory, the director of Internet analysis at Dyn Research, an Internet performance company, said Monday the problems began over the weekend and grew progressively worse to the point that "North Korea's totally down."

South Korean officials said early Tuesday in Seoul that Internet access to the North's official Korean Central News Agency and the Rodong Sinmun newspaper were working normally again.

Another Internet technology service, Arbor Networks, which protects companies against hacker attacks, said its monitoring detected denial-of-service attacks aimed at North Korea's infrastructure starting Saturday and persisting Monday. Such attacks transmit so much spurious data traffic to Internet equipment that it becomes overwhelmed, until the attacks stop or the spurious traffic can be filtered and discarded to allow normal connections to resume.

Given North Korea's limited connectivity and lack of Internet sophistication, it would be relatively simple for a band of hacktivists to shut down online access, and it should not be assumed that the U.S. government had any part, said Dan Holden, director of security research at Arbor Networks.

"Anyone of us that was upset because we couldn't watch the movie, you could do that. Their Internet is just not that sophisticated," Holden said.

Madory said one benign explanation for the problem might be that a router suffered a software glitch, though a cyber-attack involving North Korea's Internet service was also a possibility. Routing instabilities are not uncommon, but instead of getting better, as one might expect, "it's getting worse, getting progressively degraded," Madory said.

"This doesn't fit that profile," of an ordinary routing problem, he said. "This shows something getting progressively worse over time."

Aww men I was hoping the US would not rise to the bait. The hack routes all went through china. The Chinese may not have been able to stop it but the were sure able to get a good look at US cyber command assault sub-routines and will be studying the information gleaned very intensely.
Cyber commands first act was supposed to be major like war with China. Now the "main enemy" has gotten a good look at their force structure, without engaging with them.

How exactly will NK retaliate. If the cyberwar goes fullscale, the US will send them to the Neolithic age.

There are two main weapon systems suits that (mostly western forces) try to never use unless its fir real war and against a peer state [read China,Russia]:

Cyber war tools (stuxnet, major bandwidth hacks, communication nodes and operating systems).

Electronic warfare tools (radar systems, sensor disruption, anti disruptive systems[resilient system ]anti-jamming technologies like frequency hopping and DSSS (Direct Sequence Spread Spectrum).

Not a matter of movies, even when this systems are built they try to test them as far away from human/urban areas as much as possible.Places like china lake and far up the Arctic or Antarctica places it will be hard to have spy's come looking .

The U.S. Air Force, has taken the lead in developing electronic tools for attacking and defending satellite communications, he satellites themselves, and has been training people to use these techniques. This effort involves figuring out new, or improved, ways to jam satellites. Then you keep that stuff secret, in case potential enemies have not figured this out themselves. Next, you work on ways to defeat the weapons developed. Most of this is playing around with the signals themselves. You can un-jam a jamming signal with another signal. However, a lot of trial and error is required and you want to get that done way in advance of any actual war. When you do have to use this stuff for real, you have to expect that the enemy may well have come up with some angle you missed. Thus, there will be some rapid improvisation, and you will have more time and resources for this if you have worked out ahead of time the details of disasters you have already anticipated. No one is releasing much information about this, for obvious reasons. There won't be much discussion from any government, unless there is a terrorist attack using these techniques.

Do you know how many Hollywood movies that the US President was killed? With great details. While out of respect I don't support the movie production, but a little comedy will not hurt the fat kid in North Korea.

I agree with you. I don't like Kim at all. But ur point was a US citizen making film abt US president not the other way round. Thats my problem with the whole thing. This movie is about an assasination on a pres. Of another country.

It was even presented in a funny way.

American is a stupeed country! I mean, why make a move about assassinating the president of another country? Using his real name and the real name of the country? I mean on his own soil? Is there any greater insult than this?

Imagine, a movie made about killing obama and ridiculing him to the whole world!? Why is is when they make movies about American presidents they never use their real names? And at the end of the day, the president always is some sort of a hero, kills the bad guys and never dies even with all the odds stacked against him!

I can name 20 movies at d top of my head about American presidents attached but the manage to kill the bad guys and lived!

And for the fact that obama was behind Sony is just disgusting. Hypocracy at its highest. The are bullies and nothin more!

Sometimes I wonder how people reason.

Something of this nature happened earlier this year between U.S nd Russia
Lotta peeps said Russia will crumble U.S economy this nd that at the end Russia is paying the price.

Now NK nd u still see peeps talk trash.
Americans don't just act movies for acting sake they do based on intelligence gathered either from their own or from other country nd add a lil bit of entertainment.

Americans re d world power nd they act as such irrespective of d circumstances
Unlike our clueless fisherman.
