Well, they can, but the chances of having children with sickle cell disease is just the same as when AS and AS have kids.

1 in 4 chance of SC-sickle cell disease (sufferers may not have it as severe as SS sufferers, but are still sickle cell disease sufferers nonetheless)

1 in 4 chance of AC

1 in 4 chance of AS

1 in 4 chance of AA

It's good the said couple is well aware of what they're getting into.
