LONDON, Nov. 17— More than 40 soldiers have been executed in Lagos after a plot to assassinate Nigeria's military leaders was uncovered, a London newspaper said in its Sunday issue. The paper, The Observer, said 42 officers and enlisted men were involved, including two lieutenant colonels and four majors. The plan had been to gun down the Nigerian leader, Gen. Mohammed Buhari, and his ministers while they were watching the independence day parade in Lagos on Oct. 1, the paper said. But the plot was revealed, and the plotters were rounded up and shot in an underground firing range at Ikeja, outside Lagos, it said. General Buhari toppled the civilian Government of President Shehu Shagari in a coup on Dec. 31, 1983.

Buhari conducted a coup that toppled a democratically elected government in 1983. If not for him, Nigeria's democracy would have developed by now.
His regime can best be described as "Reign of Terror", so feudal was his policies and style of administration. His acts of gross human rights abuses was so terrible to the extent that late Fela Kuti referred him as "Animal in Human Skin".
In sane societies, people like Buhari will be cooling themselves in prison for committing acts of Treason.

Illogical conclusion of an underdeveloped mind. grin

Buhari apologists always tell us that Buhari wasn't involved in the 1983 coup, that lie has since been busted.
They tell us that Buhari wasn't desperate to hang on to power that was why IBB overthrew him easily, but this killing of 40 soldiers for plotting a coup proves that he was indeed desperate to retain power. His cluelessness was what made IBB overthrow him easily.
can you tell me the penalty for failed coup de tat? I can remember when a korean leader executed HIS UCLE Just because he planned to overthrow him.

Oga, abeg na which coup plot be that? Mention the major actors of the coup. I'm a Nigerian and find it uncomfortable that a foreign newspaper is telling me a bout a major coup plot in recent time that I never read about in recent history of the country. So Can you please educate us more on this phantom coup that occurred under GMB reign...I want to learn please. By the way, what date was GMB overthrown from power again?

How would you read it when Buhari's regime killed freedom of the local press?
Oh, and Buhari was overthrown on August 27th, 1985. The mass execution happened in 1984.

And the reward for mutiny and insubordination in an armed force anywhere in the world is?

Compare your answer to the question above to your party's stand on the Mutiny in the Nigerian Army.

HYPOCRISY!!!

It depends on the actions taken , the reason those soldiers were court martialed and sentenced to death was because they shot at their CO.
The consequence of a failed coup is death same as a failed mutiny where even in UK why don't you try attack the UK prime minister and see how quickly your death sentence would be read out in a country without capital punishment.

These TANidiots are something else entirely. I no just understand them again.
You don't even understand anything. So why would you understand them (TANoid)?

A Coup plot, whether successful or not is wrong. The reason why it's only the failed coup plotters that get punished and not the successful ones is because the successful ones must have installed themselves into power. Now do you expect them to punish themselves? Certainly not grin

I also wonder why APC would condemn the death penalty on the mutiny soldiers when in fact their presidential candidate has executed soldiers in the past for coup plot.

Coup, Mutiny are serious offence in the military and their punishment is death. Buhari, IBB, Gowon all deserve to face the music too. This will serve as a deterrent to any officer who is contemplating a coup in the future.

Please you all should take another look @ the main post. When Buhari toppled shehu shagari via a coup; shehu shagari wasn't killed but was put under house arrest and also Buhari toppled his regime due to the fact that there was mismanagement of resources, he ordered the execution of these soldiers because they had the plan for a bloody coup!
And also during the time of military the rule was by decree!!! Why was OBJ not accused of completely destroying a town and it's inhabitants all because of the death of a soldier? It was in the time of DEMOCRACY! Can't you see it's a demo of craziness undecided?!.

If there really was mutiny, the army should handle it as it deems fit.

So, stop hyperventilating unnecessarily.

They handled it accordingly by sentencing those found guilty to death according to military law..

but your party kept shouting!!!!

And before I forget, the DG of your party's campaign encouraged soldiers to mutiny. whereas his boss wasted 40 lives that attempted mutiny in 1984!!!

Can you see your party's hypocrisy?

[size=18pt]"You media men have created this impression that we are fighting each other. Look at us here today," Babangida said.

"He knows what I mean and I know what he means. We both fought to keep Nigeria one when we were young majors then.

"We were well travelled. I want to commend APC for choosing our colleague as your flag bearer.

"All of us will support you (Buhari) in this course to salvage this country," he said.

Buhari told Babangida that his visit to Minna was part of his campaign to solicit for support ahead of the election.

He also said he had visited Chief Olusegun earlier but that all his efforts to pull the former President into the APC had not yielded any fruit.

He further assured Babangida that the APC would take over the state in the forthcoming elections in the state and that the APC's position had been boosted by those who have decamped in the state.
