Top Alshabaab Commander Killed By 2 Civilians in Hirshabelle

Two Charcoal dealers on Tuesday surrendered to Hirshabelle authorities after killing a top Alshabaab commander in Eleher some 50km from Jowhar The commander has been identified as Abdirahman Raahale and is said to be one of the top commanders of the militant group in central Somalia.

According to Hirshabelle authorities a gunfight ensued between the commander and the two traders when the former tried to extort the charcoal dealers. The two charcoal dealers were displayed to the media. They claim they were forced to assasinate the commander after many complaints by locals of Eldher Barsame, 50 KM west Jowhar.

Alshabaab still controls a number of rural villages and towns. Extorting of traders has been one of their main sources of finance according to reports

Alshabaab still control pockets of resistance in parts of Middle Shabelle and Galgudud

Residents of Eldher like many of the Alshabaab controlled areas have been fighting a losing battle in the last 2 years with no military assistance from the Somalia National Army and Amisom.

Pro-government soldiers, AU forces clash with Al Shabaab in Qoryoley district

Somali National Army (SNA), backed by AMISOM troops managed to repulse Al Shabaab militants who attempted to raid their military bases in Qoryoley district, about 120 km north west of Mogadishu, Garowe Online reports.

Confirming the incident, SNA official in the town, told GO over the phone that allied forces killed 4 militants and inflicted heavy losses on Al Shabaab group.

Al Qaeda-linked Al shabaab militants lost most of their weaponry, including AK-47 rifles, RPGs and machine guns in the overnight clash in Qoryoley district in Lower Shabelle region, added the official.

On the other hand, Al Shabaab claimed victory after the heavy clashes, saying its fighters have killed Ali Nune, the Deputy Commissioner of Qoryoley district.

Despite the claims made by Al Shabaab, Somali government officials remained quiet regarding the killing of Ali Nune, whom the group said he was in charge of the town.

Residents said the situation have returned to normal in the morning, following last night battle between Al Shabaab and the Somali troops backed by Ugandan soldiers serving with the African Union mission in Somalia (AMISOM).

Qoryoley, a key agriculture-rich district in Lower Shabelle region fell to SNA and AMISOM in 2014, after pushing the militants out of the town in a joint military operation.

Al Shabaab group still carry out sporadic attacks against the SNA and AMISOM military bases in the district, killing a number of soldiers and civilians in recent months, according to residents.

Sisi announces 22-year-old suicide bomber behind Cairo church attack, four suspects arrested - Politics - Egypt

The bomb attack on Cairo's St. Peter and St. Paul Church on Sunday was carried out by a 22-year-old suicide bomber, President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi said during an address at a state funeral for the 24 victims of the blast.
El-Sisi named the man as Mahmoud Shafiq Mohamed Mostafa.

"Since yesterday the police have been gathering the scattered remains of Mahmoud Shafiq Mohamed Mostafa," Sisi said, adding that four people have been arrested, including one woman, for alleged involvement in the incident, while two more suspects are being pursued.

Twenty-four people were killed and 49 injured after a bomb exploded inside a church attached to the Coptic cathedral in Cairo on Sunday, one of the deadliest attacks on Egyptian Christians in recent years.

"We will not forfeit our revenge, even after those are arrested, and frankly, the government and the parliament have to act more," El-Sisi said, calling on the executive and legislative authorities to enact laws to enable the judiciary to counter terrorism.

"The laws are restricting the judiciary; the judiciary will not be able to deal with terrorism firmly, [to deal with all those who] attack our nation's security and our loved ones," the president said.

Before the funeral President El-Sisi held a meeting with Prime Minister Sherif Ismail and a number of other senior security officials to follow up on the investigations of the deadly attack and security measures in place around the country, an earlier presidential statement said.

The meeting was attended by Defence Minister Sedky Sobhy, Interior Minister Magdy Abdel-Ghafar, and representatives of the National Security Apparatus.

El-Sisi said that this attack is an act of despair.

“Do not say it was a security flaw; what happened was an act of desperation," he said.

"They [evil forces] have been trying to shake us for three years; they [try to ruin the] economy but nothing, terrorism and nothing…75 attacks on churches but still nothing."

"Our condolences to all the Egyptian people, I will not say our Christian brothers, our condolences to all Egyptians," the president said.

"This attack caused a great pain but it will never break us…We will stand firm and God willing we will win this war," El-Sisi concluded his address.

Sunday’s attack, which blasted through the side inside the church where women worshippers sit, is considered the biggest such attack on a Coptic church since January 2011, when 23 people were killed in an explosion at Two Saints Church in Alexandria.

The perpetrators of the Alexandria attack were never discovered.

On Sunday, Egypt’s official news agency MENA quoted a security source as saying that the explosion was caused by a bomb containing 12kg of TNT.

No group has yet claimed responsibility for Sunday’s attack.

Four Al Shabaab Militants Killed in Garissa, Kenya

Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) soldiers killed four Al Shabaab militants in Hulugho, Garissa County following a gun battle. Spokesman Col Paul Njuguna said the soldiers engaged the militants in a gunfight at Mchanga Nyekundu area at around 10 am.

According to Njuguna, the KDF soldiers who were on their normal patrol confronted the militants and challenged the suspects but they fired back to the soldiers leading to exchange of fire.

Four of the militants were killed during the confrontation and several others managed to escape with serious injuries as the soldiers seized several weapons from the militants.

Njuguna confirmed that the soldiers seized nine AK-47 rifles, 15 magazines and three grenades from the engagement.

"Following the engagement, four Al Shabaab were neutralised and several escaped with injuries. Some of the assorted arms and ammunition were also recovered," he said.

He further noted that the soldiers will remain vigilant and would continue to relentlessly pursue the terrorists wherever they may be to ensure there is peace and security in the region.
