Dear Poster, I won't go into the pathology of stuttering but anyway, you have the following options: 1. Go visit a speech pathologist/ board certified fluency specialist and enroll in a speech fluency program. Am not aware there are any in naija but if ur in the states, then that won't be a problem. 2.There are anti-stuttering devices. I know its highly effective even though I understand its doesn't work in a small percentage of people. There are a few in the market and one of them is SpeechEasy(c) antistuttering devices. 3. There are certain drugs that reduce the activity of dopamine in the brain, but lets not get into this. Anyway, do your research and it be best you meet with a speech pathologist. Good luck to you.! fsb |

I love stammers. They always crack me up big tyme. Anytime i feel blue, i always look for a stammerer. They provide for delightful entertainment and excruciating laughter that hurt my ribs. When you see them trying to pronounce a word for example "DISINFECTANT", You see their eyes dilate, their chests swelled and puffed up, their necks all straightened out with the veins coming out and their mouths wide open like a mercedes benz drop top and the chhh. . .chhh. . chhh, stammering echo begins to rev up: "DISSSS. . . .SSSSIIIII, FE. . . . . FEC. . . . .TA. . . . TAAAA. . . TANTTTTT!" and when they finish that long boorish word, they will now reconfirm it again at once without stammering to drive home their speech prowress"DISINFECTANT". If you really want to laugh out loud, you tell them immediately that you didnt hear what they just finished saying and force them to go through that comedic sequence again of repeating that word in a stammering fashion. Honestly say the truth, how many of you havent felt like breaking into laughter tears when your conversing with a stammerer? its always a thing of joy and fun, especially those who think they can mask their stuttering by speaking in a fast manner but when the stammering hooks them mid way, chei, the next word that comes out will take an average of 3 minutes for them to pronounce it. I wonder why stammers are discriminated at from saying the news on radio or T.v? If i had only one wish, it will be to watch a one hour news broadcast proffered by a chronic stammer!!! I know that day, i will be due for a rib transplant!!!. . . lol Do i feel sorry for them? Hell No! Rather i adore their prescence to entertain me beyond my wildest dream. Its doubly funny when its a chick that stammers. Now that one, i cannot pretend and hold the laughter within. After watching her pancake her face and adorned with sexy clothes and she acts like a stuck up snobbish b***tch, its a major relief to see her do the chi. . . chhhh. . . .chhhhhhhhh . . . routine sketch all night! |

There is no cure for stuttering which I know but If you try to have total control over your actions it will reduce. Be conscious of what ever you do Don't be in a hurry to respond to people Be calm Don't be nervous Have confidence ANGER: The worst thing that can happen to a stammer> Control your temper or simply don't say anything Speech Therapy: It may or may not work for you. It usually works for 10 out of 100. 1 Like |

I'll advice you to do the following - Avoid refined sugar - Refined sugar is a killer. Try eatng a cube of sugar and then have a llong conversation 20 mins after. You'll notice your stutter gets worse due to tension in your vocal cords. Avoid refined sugar for 1 week and see the results. Drink as much warm/hot water as you can, especially before giving a speech. You'll notice mre flient speech throughout the day. Warm water loosens your vocal cord. Also avoid coffee. Confidence plays a major part in stutteing, so it's important you start-your speech / sentences well. This way, you build the confidence required to complete the rest of your statements fluently. Take a deep breath before you begin, one word at a time. When you speak, remember to speak slowly. Some of the best speakers in the world are unrushed but slow and deliberate. Think of Nelson Mandela, Barack Obama, Bill Clinton etc, Take your time and get into the habit. You'll be a much better speaker. Try all of these, and you'll be amazed at the result! |

My dad told me a trick that works. M A G I C He asked me if I stammer when I sing. My answer was no. So he said, just pretend you're singing! And voala, it works. Of course you won't sing really, but stream your speech like you're singing. PS. I didn't stammer till I started making fond of my brother who did, when I was seven |

My step brother and I were the stutterers in my family. I used to wonder why everyone else used to laugh instead of settling our heated arguments. Its so hurtful when people laugh at your speech patterns, I tell you, used to make me want to break someone's head. Now, I just respect myself and speak slowly. Bloody stutter comes right out when I'm angry though. |

Moses, the meakest man in his days was a stammer and he achieved mighty things that even Aaron, who was not a stutterer couldn't do. The fact that you are a stammerer doesn't mean you should be cold and withdrawn. What i think you should do is: 1. Study very well - this will help your brains and your reasoning faculty and processing of information will be at lightening speed which will in effect affect your speech. 2. Believe God for healing - it's an ailment and so there is provision for healing by the Blood of Jesus. Check the book of Isaiah 53 or thereabout. 3. Be patient when talking - if you know that you can't compose your words effectively while talking slowly, then i'll advise that you talk fast but, you must think very well before talking. 4. Be prayerful I'm sure that by the time you engage yourself in all of these activities, there will be a commensurate improvement. Best regards |

Stammering is not a disease but a habit. Which means that it can be stopped with speech therapy(which i dont think exist in Nigeria). But without therapy, the following could be useful: 1.Control your breathe. Try to speak one whole line in one breathe. 2.Change your style of speaking. 3.Listen to some great speakers and try to speak like them. 4.Do not think about stuttering while speaking, put your mind on ither things. 5.Above all remember that you have to face tour fears. Build your self-esteem. Beleive in yourself and remember that if it is to be, it is up to you. All the best. |

You may want to try that singing therapy that someone pointed out earlier on, it actually works. You won't or can't stammer when you sing. Assume the same composition as you speak. It worked for me, My stammering is GONE mate. And it was BAD, ", the hip, hipp, hippopo, tamus" type stammer that leaves tears in your eyes and laughter in the audience. |

This is interesting. I travel by train to/from work, and the train driver always cracks me up with his announcements. Reading this thread now, I can see that this is the strategy the geeza is playing out. I thought it was a joke initially, but eventually figured out he had a speech impediment he was trying to mask. He does really sound like he's singing a song, which comes accross as quite strange, though a lot more fluent that his normal speech would have been I can tell. How do you talk and "sing" without sounding like a comedian, or appearing to be talking too fast? |

Y'all have been wonderful with ur tips and advice et al. I've been stammering since i was a kid. I have a younger brother who does too, and i think its genetic. It's not that pronounced now though. However, as a kid, i used to hate it when people laughed while i was trying to express myself. That in itself, kills self-confidence. As a result, i never liked answering questions in class, even in cases when i was d only one dat seemed to know d answer. D same went on through secondary and university days, and asking me to speak in public was almost d same thing as crucifying me. I still haven't overcome d shyness about speaking in public, however i do it once a while on occasions when i just have to come to grips with myself. However, like some have said, whenever i sing (cos i sing well, been a while though) i never have to stammer. And like i came to discover a few years ago, whenever i try to speak like an american i just flow smoothly, but when i dey speak like a naija man, i stutter (especially, when i have to speak in public, or in a formal setting, but i'm usually cool with one on one speaking). But when i'm trying to speak like a yankee man in naija, pple go dey tink say i dey form, especially those that know me well (family). As a result, it becomes shortlived and i speak d normal english any nigerian would speak. However, i'd look more closely at the tips given by posters here, and try to get out what works best for me. New suggestions are welcome as well. |

Yea I used to stutter quite badly when I was much younger, some people used to tease me about it, so I used to attack them. Elder Nigerians used to laugh at it too and when I was 13 I ran into some older Nigerian man in Peckham who kept laughing at it in broken English and gisting about it infront of other olders, until I busted his bottom lip. Everyone was shocked but I was ready to kill that day, shit just got outta hand. But actually it has been YEARS since I stuttered now, its pretty much gone. I just stay focused on what I'm saying and thats it, because even people who dont stutter still do so when they are nervous but that aint really stammering is it. So I'm good now. But I got into alot of beef with people because of it. Even when I'm angry or in a hurry I dont stutter. |

Indeed there're basic cures for stammerin, my neighbors child used to stammer until i got her to try something different, reading ABC backwards as slow as she could, becuz stammerers are ALWAYS nervous, they anticipate, It didnt work at first, but as time progressed, she warmed up to it, Try calmin down when talkin and if hooks u,take ca break, take deep breaths in-between conversations, If this doesnt work, God help u |
