Getting over a breakup can be an extremely difficult task, especially for people who have been in their relationships for a long period of time. Emotional and physical strains can become almost too much to bear. The shorter the time frame of the relationship the easier it will be to begin getting over a breakup. Fortunately there are a few things you can do to make the process a little bit easier and help you gain better control of the physical and emotional trauma that can be associated with breaking up. Here are a few suggestions that others have found beneficial for speeding up the process of getting over a breakup.

Getting rid of every trace of your ex mates impact on your life could prove to be a very difficult and unnecessary task, but cleaning the excess clutter out of your life may prove to make getting over a breakup a little bit easier on your mind and body and help with some much needed instant gratification.

Start getting over a breakup by gathering up anything of value that your ex gave you as a gift from special occasions like Birthdays, Christmas, Valentines Day, or Anniversaries. It probably won't be necessary to dispose of these items, but it will be extremely helpful to put them away somewhere until such time that your emotions are in a less fragile condition. The less important or trivial things like greeting cards, old love letters, souvenirs from the fair, old concert tickets, the wishbone from your first Thanksgiving together, and any other items that have no monetary value should be thrown away as soon as possible. This initially may be somewhat painful because of the memories that these items tend to stir up. In the long haul you will be much better off getting these items out of sight, and more importantly, out of your mind.

This doesn't mean you have to get rid of everything, just the things that you have the strongest feelings about. Things that every time you look at them, remind you of the past. There will come a time when looking at these items will mean very little more than a remembrance of the past and you will be able to view them with no grief.

Another getting over a breakup tactic that has worked for others begins by making a list of every reason that you will be better off without your ex. Although this sounds negative at the onset, it will allow you to get over the situation at a quicker pace by getting over these negative feelings and allowing the more positive influences to pave the way toward your new life.

Getting over a breakup doesn't mean the end of your life. Get out of the house, surround yourself with positive supportive friends. Go out on a date if the opportunity presents itself. Take your time, dating doesn't mean you have to fall in love with some one.

It is very important during this period to keep up with your old friends and also to begin cultivating new social activities. Keeping busy and more importantly keeping your mind busy will make the time pass and help to bring your life back to normal.
