Students of Ondo State origin, on Friday, blocked the Akure/Owo Expressway protesting over the incessant road accidents often caused by trailers on the road.

The protesters, under the aegis of National Association of Nigerian Students, prevented vehicular movement for several hours.

The students called on the Federal Government to create an alternative routes for trucks and trailers on the road or ban them from moving during the day time.

The protest was said to have taken place after the expiration of a seven-day ultimatum issued to the Federal Government to ban trailers from plying the highways during the day.

Speaking on behalf of the students, the National Vice President of the National Association of Nigerian Students, Timileyin Ayenuro, said the protest became necessary so as to let the government know about the situation on the highways.

"We cannot allow our colleagues to be dying of roads accidents caused by trailers. Sone weeks ago, we lost about seven students on this road, last month, 12 students of the Olabisi Onabanjo University lost their lives in an accident caused by a trucks.

"Students of UNIBEN also died in an accident two weeks ago. In Onitsha, 68 people lost their lives. Just this morning (Friday), about eight people died in an accident caused by truck in Oyo State, this is what is happening, so we want the Federal Government to find solution to this."
