THE presidency may have extended the tenure of office of the Inspector General of Police, Mr. Mike Okiro, by one year. Indications to this emerged on Thursday as presidency sources in Abuja hinged the decision of President Umaru Yar’Adua on the belief that the IG had performed excellently, since the confirmation of his appointment.

Nigerian Tribune learnt that the Police Service Commission (PSC) recommended the one year extension to the presidency. Mr. Okiro was expected to proceed on his terminal leave this month when he would have spent 35 years mandatory service. The sources, who craved for anonymity, however, said that the extension was sequel to Okiro’s leadership style which had ensured security of life and property across the country.

Nigerian Tribune further learnt that the presidency was particularly happy that armed robbery attacks on banks, bullion vans and other commercial outlets in the country had almost become a thing of the past.

It was gathered that with the unfolding development, the IGP’s initial plan to commence his terminal leave, preparatory to his retirement might have been put on hold, at least for now.

The sources further stated that no one changes a winning team, adding that the ability of Mr. Okiro to have nipped in the bud, the kidnapping saga in the troubled, Niger Delta region may have further improved his rating as a detective par excellence in the minds of some powerful people in the corridors of power.

These individuals were said to have acted as godfathers to Mr. Okiro and had been responsible for strengthening his case before they eventually got President Yar’Adua’s approval for the extension between last Monday and Tuesday in Abuja.

It was, however, gathered that some senior officers of the Nigeria Police who were said to have been eyeing the post as the possible successor to Mr. Okiro were not happy about the presidency’s decision to extend the IGP’s tenure by one year.

What can I say. . .

The man is trying his best to fight crime in the country; maybe he deserves the one year deal.

he should go home and rest, there are many qualified police officers who can do the job even better than he, so i see no reason why the president should extend his tenure. or do we lack officers in this country. okiro must have gone to beg him to extend his tenure.

My dear, don’t say that; all the ex police Igs have proved nothing; they have all ended up in EFCC detentions after their tenure.

What’s the probability that the next person after Okiro would take the job as serious as the way he does?

Would you now repeat the same mistake that the kicked-out PDP made?

Atiku has no ideas, no positive plans, no reputable record, no impressive support.

All he is up to these days is to scream like a baren witch and reacting like a nuclear device.

Both scenarios are not the same and cannot be used to justify each other.

Okiro's case was in 2009, 2 years after elections. But here here we have an election to prosecute and this IG has been found to be partisan.

In Okiro's case, it was cited that there was improve in the security situation in the country but that cannot be said in the current IG's case when Benue, Zamfara, Plateau, etc, is being run over herdsmen while two ex army generals has just recently been slaughtered like fowls.

Talking about police involvement in elections like Ekiti and Osun is a chronicle of sorrow.

So, what is the justification for elongating Idris' tenure?
