The problem with Nigeria is lawlessness
From top to bottom.
Like Richie pointed out, where was the govt when Maroko residents pitched their tent there?
Where was the govt when Pa Ibrahim started his "forknizing" business at that spot in 1978?

so whose fault is it?

He is just a victim of circumstance. . . .
Life taught me you don't need faults to get punished.
This is AFRICA. . . . .Y'all should stop comparing Lagos State to Washington.

if his structures have lasted 31 years who the fried fish is Fashola to wake up and destroy them without a ready alternative.
all this agbero justice is leading us no where.
This is a father of young children for heaven's sake

So he should be left alone because his structure had existed for 31 years ILLEGALLY??
What are you guys on about?? If the government says the structure is illegal then it is ILLEGAL. . . . . .End of story.
Should he be compensated?? Hell Yea. . . . . .But is he justified to go into CRIME because his structure was demolished??

Good job identifying the problem. So why are you sympathetic to lawlessness in this regard?

Well the government is here now. Those Maroko residents are going to be moving too, the government is currently building state housing (i am sure some people will complain about that too.)

In regards to  America's constitution  the man might deserve compensation even if its illegal, because he has owned it for 30+ years. But the same cannot be said in regards to Nigeria's constitution

That is the lawlessness I'm talking about.

why would anyone compare Nigeria to the USA?

The comparison is laughable.

It is that pathetic kind of reasoning that stifles our development as a nation. Instead of us fighting the oppressive imbeciles treating us like dispensable pawns, we're pointing finger at Obama.

Jubril Ibrahim, and countless others have been illegally dispossessed of their sources of income, humiliated and forced to contemplate illegal means of survival, yet some Nigerians will excuse the poor treatment of the poor, under the guise of "developing Lagos", but will say "kini big deal?" when another thief buys a billion naira private jet. They can't even ask, how can this husband and father of seven be compensated? Does he have legal recourse? How can we help him? What we see are sycophants blaming him for having seven kids (I know, they want to make that illegal too!), for being on the same spot for over three decades, etc. Has he stolen money from anyone? Has he committed any crimes? All he did was to provide a legal service to customers who needed his expertise. Now the government has displaced him. He ought to be compensated!

The Stockholm Syndrome has affected too many Nigerians!

But when this heartless worldview comes back to bite them in the butt, they start speaking in tongues!

Nigerians can be very heartless creeps!

I will never forget the day I was on our staff boss going to work and we saw two burnt bodies on the road in the busy Boundry/Ajegunle road, at around 6:45 AM. I was appalled and was soliloquizing on why these young men were brutally killed, mutilated and burnt? That what could have prompted the OPC men to kill these young men with such brutality? The look and response I got from fellow commuters that morning solidified my belief that, unless there is a miracle, Nigeria is doomed. Not all, but most people on the bus were speaking as if they were there when the men stole some yams and were chased and caught. My argument that such jungle justice was extrajudicial and are prone to error, to execute a personal vendetta, misunderstanding, wrong identity, etc. fell on deaf ears. Many of these fellow Nigerians were 100% convinced that those two dismembered young men were guilty of stealing some yams and hence deserved to be brutally murdered.

This is the Nigeria people live in today. Very bold to confront yam thieves but unbelievable timid, to the point of subservience, when it is time to confront those who have stolen billions of dollars!

Shame on Nigerians for allowing this form of oppression on the poor!!!

What beautification are you talking about. Is planting flowers more important than people life. No there should not be houses under a bridge. but this people pay the govt of lagos money monthly. The govt should relocate them.
it is not your business what did man did.

every rich man in nigeria stole to make it. or your father stole. So your father was a thief like this man is trying to do. Some omo OLE ni e. you are child of a thief if your father is rich in nigeria. your father is an OLE i mean barawo. Same with the night arm robber.

Those whose palm kennel have been crake by the spirit should not forget to be humble.

fashola should be  ready to continue the beautification in ikoyi. Why. Ikoyi is blocking the ikorodu -ikoyi bridge. Everybody in Ikoyi needs to be relocated too. habi. Now can you people laugh.

It is cheating. do unto others what you want them to do unto you.
Do you know any nigerian who never stole to become rich can that people put his name on the internet. I would want to meet that person. You people leave this man with no option than rob you.

When you destroy people means of living. You know they would destroy you too.
. And they now complain. Why? would you complain when you block others, if they block you.

Now fashola is doing is own. he should not forget people would laugh last, planting flower is not important. build lagos but make provision first.
if not even fashola too may get rob by this people. Oga fash because of God provide alternative. Eko oni baje.

An illegal structure is illegal regardless of how long it has stood or been occupied. That said I think the lagos government is doing the right thing but I can be done better. You absolutely have to provide viable alternatives. Joblessness leads to crime, provide stalls and or set areas for these folks, set up programs where they can find an acceptable way to practice their trades then demolish with extreme prejudice.

Well, in the same Lagos, if you bought a piece of land and left it empty for a long time. If it happens that someone else occupies that land during that time, I believe after a certain period, the occupier can claim that land. The space Ibrahim occupied may have been illegal 31 years ago, but the fact that he was ALLOWED by every government in that state since then to continue to illegally occupy it, raises the question of the illegality/or not of his occupancy.

I believe it has to be for a period not less than three years and still not ironclad.

That will just encourage more Lagosians to go that route, which is what the state government is trying to stop.

Or it may encourage more Lagosians to demand their government make more people-centric decisions even as it builds.

That is a lie! If it was illegal 31 years ago, why wasn't he notified of it? Why wasn't he asked to leave? Why wasn't he removed?

If the inept government don't enforce the laws on the book, then whatever acts tied to those laws become de facto legal.

There are anti-sodomy laws in some southern states in the US, however, they are not enforced, hence making them de facto legal.

Are you even aware that Nigeria has anti-sodomy laws (in the criminal code)? They are hardly enforced, hence having anal sex in Nigeria is de facto legal.

If all those hopeless governments that have come and gone in Lagos State, have not enforced the laws, then those activities tied to whatever laws that were never enforced are deemed to be de facto legal.

I think we at some point have to move towards demanding our government makes more plans to accomodate all persons in society even as it makes these changes. You need to calm down and stop demonizing people who just want to see law and order reign in Nigeria once more. As far as i'm concerned, the guy was occupying an illegal structure and the fact that successive governments did nothing to curb this does not mean it's right.
