Partners frequently ask us how many users are actually viewing their books.
If a book receives 1000 page views, does that mean 1000 users saw my book?
To address this, we've added a column for Book Views to the Partner Center reports tab. Each time a book is viewed, we'll report a unique Book View regardless of the number of pages that user viewed. So, if 10 users each view 5 pages, your report will show 10 Book Views and 50 Page Views.

Based on your feedback, 'Buy This Book' clickthrough rate (BTB CTR) will now be calculated using Book Views (as opposed to Page Views). If 10 users each view 5 pages and one of those users clicks a 'Buy This Book' link, your BTB CTR will be 10% (1 BTB click/10 Book Views) instead of 2% (1 BTB click/50 Page Views).

In addition, we've decided to use the term Impressions instead of Page Views to more accurately describe what this number represents. An Impression is counted in your reports each time a user has an opportunity to view one of your books' pages, whether or not your content is actually displayed. When users land on one of your books' pages, they may either (1) view the book's page without logging in, (2) encounter a login page, or (3) encounter a restricted page. Each of these instances counts as an impression.

Shakespeare page
As a sponsor of Shakespeare in the Park (Public Theater's annual performance of Shakespeare in New York's Central Park), we created a site dedicated to Shakespeare where users can access the Bard's complete plays in Google Book Search, browse through familiar works, or follow their curiosity to discover new ones.

Banned Books Week page
To help celebrate the 25th anniversary of Banned Books Week, we recently worked with the American Library Association to create a page highlighting 42 literary classics that have been banned or challenged throughout the years. Users can easily explore titles like 1984, Heart of Darkness, The Jungle and more as well as find books about these classic novels.

Partner Spotlight

Upper Access, Inc. gains exposure, expands customer base and jumpstarts backlist sales
We recently spoke with Steve Carlson, publisher of Upper Access, about his participation in the Google Books Partner Program. Steve had a lot to say about the positive results Upper Access has seen. A few quotes from our discussion:
"I can trace sales of 244 books directly to Google, all sold from our site in the last 10 months. So far, we've seen 53 unique customers who say they found us through Google, so we're averaging 5.3 new customers a month. While these numbers may seem small, for a small publisher they're significant, especially since many of these orders come from organizations that buy multiple copies of a particular book. They represent continuing sales for the backlist.

For instance, we have a book to help doctors notify people about the death of a patient. It was published back in '94, but a medical conference organizer found it this year, and every few months we see another order for 12-24 copies. Another example is a local history museum in Massachusetts that's been buying one of our books – it was never one of our bestsellers, but the information it contains fits perfectly for them. And we have a customer who's very interested in memory recovery – a hot topic in the mid-'90s – who found a book we published on the subject and now buys 10 copies at a time for her friends.

My sense is that these are people who are looking for the best information on a topic, not for books necessarily – otherwise, they'd probably go to Amazon or their local bookstore. They may have just been searching on Google and happened upon a book. That's the value Google brings."
