The Department of State Services (DSS)will be long appear before the Senate over degrading and inhuman treatment it meted to 60 cadets undergoing training, which it dismissed last week.

Nigerian Times checks reveal that the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) is also set to look into circumstances surrounding the dismissal of the cadets, who had been employed by the DSS and have been in training since December 2014.

The 60 cadets, who had been in training for nine months at the DSS Academy in Lagos, were part of Cadet Officers Basic Course 28 of 2014 codenamed COBC28/2014. They had one month to go on their training when they were summarily dismissed last week.

The letter of their dismissal dated September 4, 2014 and signed on behalf of the DSS Director General, Lawal Daura by one GK Mohammed, read:

“I am directed to inform you that the Director General, State Services (DGSS) has approved the termination of your appointment from Service with immediate effect. You are, however, required to hand over all Government property in your possession, including your Study Guide/Note Books to the Director of Studies, State Services Academy (SSA), Lagos, and obtain appropriate clearance before your final exit, please.”

Surprised and feeling shortchanged by the sudden and inexplicable decision of the leadership of the DSS, the dismissed cadets have petitioned the Senate and the NHRC seeking justice.

In the petition written on their behalf by their lawyer, Mr. Clarence Yakubu, they are alleging gross violation of their rights and human dignity as a result of the degrading and inhuman treatment they received at the hands of DSS officers before they were handed their letters of dismissal.

In the petition written to the two bodies, the cadets alleged that before collecting their letters of dismissal, the cadets were asked to report at a hall where some ladies among them were later asked by officials to take of their clothes and underwear as part of the search they were subjected to before being handed their letters.

The petition by the dismissed cadet who were among the 420 that had been undergoing training since last year, read in part:

“On Wednesday 9th of September 2015 at exactly1.00pm, a team from the National Headquarters of State Services, Abuja, came and about sixty of us were called out of the VIP Protection Practical and asked to march to the multi-purpose hall for further directives. We were asked to present our original credentials for screening.

“On Thursday the following day, all the female cadets were asked to jog to the multi-purpose hall for physical screening from there we were asked to move to tattoo ground.

“On getting there we were asked to remove our cloths completely for them to check if we have tattoo on our body. One senior officer threatened us to open our private parts and raise our hands up for them to check for the tattoo. One Muslim Lady refused to remove her pant that it was against her religion.

“After that, dismissal letters were given to us we were asked to leave the academy immediately under the rainon Friday.

The sixty of us were called out again to march to our hostels to pack our belongings.

“After few minutes later, the security guards came and hurried us out of the hostel under the heavy downpour, marched us to the gym, from there all our lecture materials and the leadership training certificate issued to us were collected from us.

“We wonder why we were so humiliated before we were asked out of a training that we had only one month left, even when the children of a past Director-General three serving directors who are also cadets were left untouched.”

No reason has been given by the DSS for the dismissal of the cadets but followers of the activities of the DSS in the last few weeks believe it could be of the determination of the Buhari administration to cleanse the service of individuals believed to be loyalists of former President Goodluck Jonathan.

Two weeks ago, the new DSS DG had dismissed the service’s former spokesperson, Marilyn Ogar, former Chief Security Officer to former President Jonathan, Gordon Obua and over forty others. One of the charges against Ogar was that she was blindly partisan in discharging her duties under the Jonathan administration.

Some of the dismissed officers have however vowed to challenge their dismissal in court

It is wrong to humiliate a woman like so. In 2015, there are better ways of scanning the body without the need to remove clothes. They have a better case against human right here....though I wont take anything that has Marilyn Ogar in it serious.

I will like to see how this case plays out in the end. The DSS has no right humiliating the Cadets the way they did.

With the right legal system, the DSS should be made to compensate the Cadets and offer unreserved apologies to them.

10 months trained and 1 more month to go and you terminate their appointment with such humiliation and no explanation..
