The ad-hoc committee set up by the House of Representatives to probe Nigeria Immigration Service's failure to follow the presidential directive ordering immediate employment to victims of the ill-fated recruitment exercise yesterday questioned the permanent secretary of the ministry of interior, Alhaji Abubakar Magaji to explain why the presidential order was not followed. Explaining the matter, Magaji said the inability of NIS' failure to employ relations of the victims after issuance of appointment letters in March as directed by the former President Goodluck Jonathan was because of "procedural errors" caused by the presidential committee on the incident. Magaji said this yesterday when he along with others appeared before the ad-hoc committee set up by the House of Representatives to probe the matter. He also said the ministry, Civil Defense, Fire, Immigration and Prisons Board (CDFIPB) was not carried along during the recruitment exercise that took place in 2013. As a result, there was non-provision of funds as salaries for the new recruits in the ministry's 2015 budget leading to abandonement of the victims. He also said the ministry decided to stop the process because there was no written approval from the president on the matter. “We are also hearing it from media. There was no letter directing us to employ this person or this number of people,” Magaji said. He said they only heard of the declaration from the media.
