Aregbesola commissions N750m school, names it after Soyinka The first in the series of mega-schools built by the Rauf Aregbesola administration in Osun state has been formally opened in Ejigbo and fittingly christened in honour of Nigeria’s Nobel laureate Wole Soyinka. The school, which cost N750million, is a 3,000-capacity complex with 72 classrooms of 49 square-metre, each capable of sitting 49 pupils. It has six offices for study groups. It will be known as Wole Soyinka Government High School, Ejigbo. It is equipped with six laboratories, 18 toilets for girls and 18 for boys, one science library, one arts library, facility manager’s office, a bookshop and a sick bay. Soyinka praised Aregbesola, saying he was elated that such honour was bestowed on him. He pledged to visit the school often to see how it was faring. He also said the school was an an “emphatic rejection of what Boko Haram insurgents preach”. He described the Federal Government’s failure to rescue the missing Chibok girls as shameful. “It is a shame that the nation cannot account for over 200 girls in Chibok. I sympathise with the religious policy of governments in school; children must not be brought up feeling that religion inhibits knowledge. “In schools, we need not distinguish our children, the fatalistic religious holiness and the holier-than-thou attitude must be reduced among our pupils.” Aregbesola said although the cost of the school was huge, he noted that it was a worthy investment. The governor promised that more of the schools would be inaugurated next year. “We can build a good road that will last for 50 years and we are doing that, but this can never compare to the enlightenment an educated person receives, in terms of its value to the society and humanity. “The state of education prior to our coming was appalling and frighteningly so. Zoos were better than the places where pupils were receiving knowledge. Many of them were dilapidated and falling down.’ http://www.pmnewsnigeria.com/2015/11/24/aregbesola-commissions-n750m-school-names-it-after-soyinka/?utm_medium=twitter&utm_source=twitterfeed |

Ondo State Govt Partner With Korean Firm To Boost Power Supply The Ondo State Government has reached a contractual agreement for the construction of a 1050 megawatt (mw) independent power project (IPP) with a South Korea firm, POSCO E&C. The agreement for an engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract for the first phase of the state’s proposed 1050mw IPP was recently sealed through partnership with the firm’s Nigerian subsidiary, Kingline Development Company. The first phase of the project involves the construction of a gas-fired power plant for the generation of 550mw which would be sold into the national grid while the second phase of the project is expected to add another 500mw to the grid network. The agreement requires the firm to see to the design, engineering, procurement, construction, commissioning and testing of the 550mw open cycle gas turbine power plant to be located in Ondo State. The firm stated that the actual construction is expected to commence in the first quarter 2016 and is expected to take about 26 months from commencement and date of issuing the notice to proceed (NTP) for the construction to be completed. Speaking to journalists in Abuja, the head of Kingline Development in Nigeria, Akinnola Fola, informed that funding had been secured for the project, adding that the EPC contract was recently signed at POSCO E&C’s headquarters in Seoul, South Korea. Giving more insights into the project, Fola explained that a Certificate of Occupancy (CofO) has already been issued for the project by the Ondo State Government even as an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) panel review has been done. http://bizwatchnigeria.ng/ondo-state-govt-partner-with-korean-firm-to-boost-power-supply/ 1 Like |

Mynd44: 1050 MW is major. This is more than enough to take care ow the state's entire energy needs.. |
Re: Yoruba Commonwealth and Politics by Mynd44: 6:03am On Dec 07, 2015 |
arresa:I disagree. Yes it is major but .ot nearly enough if we want to have huge industrialization. It might be enough to take care of the lresent need of the state but going forward, it is not enough. The way I see Ondo/Ekiti, these are states that have the potential for bot just agriculture but agro-allied and processing companies |

I won’t renege on paying N18k minimum wage- Amosun Ogun State Governor Ibikunle Amosun says he will not renege on his promise to pay the N18, 000 minimum wage despite calls by some other state governors to have the minimum wage reduced due to the reduced Federal allocation. Governor Amosun stated this during the presentation of the 2016 Appropriation bill to the members of the State House of Assembly in Abeokuta yesterday November 24th. He said his administration which had been consistent in paying its workers in spite of dwindling revenue from the Federation Account was committed to increasing the minimum wage if the economy improves. Amosun added that Ogun State remained the only State that pays marginally above minimum wage, assuring that government’s attention would be shifted to rural roads to complement the ongoing urban infrastructural projects in the next fiscal year. http://royaltimes.net/i-wont-renege-on-paying-n18k-minimum-wage-amosun/?utm_medium=twitter&utm_source=twitterfeed

The multi-million Naira Iyaafin Bosede Olanipekun Special Amenity Ward constructed and equipped by Chief Wole Olanipekun was unveiled on Saturday by the Ekiti State Governor Ayodele Fayose. PRECIOUS IGBONWELUNDU reports that the facility is second to none in the state. . Inside the State Specialist Hospital in Ikere-Ekiti, a magnificent structure stood out. The road to it was well tarred, flower beds properly laid out, with a state-of-the-art ambulance parked in front of it. . Welcome to the Iyaafin Bosede Olanipekun Special Amenity Ward donated to the state government by former President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) Chief Wole Olanipekun (SAN). Guests who thronged to the venue, including Governor Ayodele Fayose for the unveiling of the 26-bed special amenity ward, equipped with a 3D Ultrasound scan with capacity for echo-cardiography, marvelled at the masterpiece erected within four months to boost medical care for the people. As Fayose was taken round the beautiful structure, which has a standard kitchen, laundry room as well as every other world-class facility, he could not hide his disbelief that an individual could do so much even at a time states were finding it difficult to pay salaries. The governor directed that the facility must be maintained and monthly inventory taken to ensure it stays evergreen. To Fayose, Chief Olanipekun is a blessing and pride to Nigeria. Showering encomiums on the learned silk, Governor Fayose pledged to emulate him by embarking on a similar project in memory of his parents. Governor Fayose stated that unlike other rich men who will choose to save their wealth for their children’s children, Chief Olanipekun has continuously embarked on programmes and projects that would benefit the less- privileged in the society. http://thenationonlineng.net/olanipekun-donates-hospital-facility-to-community/ |

It's been quite interesting reading through all of the 373 pages of this discussion, and I appreciate seeing so much passion on here to do something to better the condition of our people. My problem, as a child of Oduduwa in the diaspora, is that I just don't see any means of contributing or participating that doesn't require involvement in organizations that have been tainted by the same old politicians. Where are the unaffiliated sociocultural groupings like original Egbe Omo Oduduwa? I'm sure that there are many professionals in and outside Nigeria who would be interested in joining in such groups as a means of contributing their skills and insights, but all I've been able to find are groupings centered on particular towns and regions of Yorubaland. In any case, I hope that whatever arguments might have occurred recently in this thread do not lead to it petering out ... |

If you do decide to get involved, and you should, be ready to roll up your sleeves as you will run into unprogressive elements with different agenda. As much as I would not like to recommend him, you should study Tinubu very well, the man is wise even if his character is not angelic. Remember, he was a returnee too at one point 1 Like |

The Speech of His Excellency Governor Akinwunmi Ambode at the Launch of the Revised Laws of Lagos State 2015 on Tuesday, 8th December, 2015 It is with great pleasure that I welcome you to the launch of the Laws of Lagos State of Nigeria 2015. Lagos has always taken the lead in Legislation and Law Reform initiatives in the Nigerian Federation. The need for legislation to be up to date and relevant cannot be over-emphasised in ensuring the necessary legal infrastructure for socio-economic transformation. Lagos as the commercial capital of Nigeria faces enormous challenges in ensuring the security and economic well-being of its residents. The publication of the 2015 Laws of the State, marks the beginning of the process of continually making the Laws accessible to the general public not only in Lagos State and Nigeria as a whole, but also beyond its borders globally. The State Government has resolved to also make the Laws of Lagos State available online and accessible from any part of the world. To this end, Lagos State Law Reform Commission is at an advanced stage of developing an online platform for accessing the Laws of the State and downloading such laws. The online platform will also provide access to all the Laws that have operated in the State since inception in 1967. This will fulfil the obligation of the Lagos State Government to create easy access to the Laws of Lagos, thereby promoting a platform for accountability and responsibility. More importantly, creating an online access to the Laws of Lagos State will be of a great service and benefit to investors and would-be investors in the State. Not only will such a platform enable investors to make informed decisions about investing in the State, but it will also help them to appreciate the various legal protections available for their persons and investment. Furthermore, the publication of the Laws of Lagos State is a step in the direction of the justice and security sector reforms which the present administration promised it will pursue in order to strengthen the rule of law in Lagos State. The publication of the 2015 Edition would not have been possible without the cooperation and hard work of the Lagos State House of Assembly for passing the laws contained in the compilation. The passage of the Laws by the State House of Assembly attests to the fact that it is the most active and vibrant legislative body in the whole of Nigeria. We cannot also but commend Lagos State Law Reform Commission for the initiative and effort resulting in the publication of the Laws of Lagos State 2015. On this note, I whole-heartedly commend the Laws of Lagos State 2015 to the general use of all of us. Thank you His Excellency, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode Governor of Lagos State 8th December, 2015 http://akinwunmiambode.com/the-speech-of-his-excellency-governor-akinwunmi-ambode-at-the-launch-of-the-revised-laws-of-lagos-state-2015-on-tuesday-8th-december-2015/

birdman: Thanks, that's just what I feared. I get what you're saying about Tinubu, but as you note, the man doesn't exactly have the purest reputation, and when I look at him, or faux-populists like Fayose with his "government by photo op", it makes me all the more reluctant to get personally involved in the rough and tumble of Nigerian politics. What I would most like to do is help draw up a plan for action or manifesto which could be used to exert pressure on the Yoruba political class to do more than just engaging in phony "man of the people" nonsense or starting up random infrastructure projects with no vision of how they will be maintained in the long term. Having studied the history of economic development of the likes of Japan, South Korea, Taiwan and now China, I see no reason why the same kind of takeoff couldn't happen in Yorubaland, but that requires a level of vision that I haven't seen from any politicians other than Fashola, Fayemi and (to some extent) Tinubu. |
