Following years of neglect by the federal and state government, the Lagos – Abeokuta expressway has become clog in the wheel of motorists. The Ilepo, Iyana Ipaja axis of the road is in a mess, a reminder of government inefficiencies and lack of maintenance culture.

For over two years, motorists plying the road have suffered untold hardship especially at the Ile Epo bus stop going to Iyana Ipaja, heavy traffic builds up from Abule Egba to the Iyana Ipaja axis.

There are many ditches and potholes along the road which restrict vehicular movement, forcing motorists to spend hours on a route they would have spent about 10mins.

Greennews.ng investigation revealed that the road gradually turned worst owing to neglect by authorities.

Our correspondent gathered that the road began it departure from good to worse when the drainage along the road was blocked with debris and waste from the market located by the roadside.

Since water will always find its way, the blocked drainage push water to flood the road whenever it rains; the water gradually destroyed the black paint (Bitumen) on the road.

A journalist who plies the road disclosed that aside the dilapidated state of the road and the traffic logjam on a daily basis, the Ilepo side of the road stinks.

“… That part of road [Ilepo Bus Stop] has been in a worst state but even with that, that place stinks badly, the journalist said.

Meanwhile, the Lagos state government through the Lagos State Public Works Corporation (LSPWC) has intervene to revamp the road. At the time of filing this report, officers of the LSPWC are filling up the potholes with stones and constructing a bigger drainage that will accommodate the water flow.

Speaking exclusively with Greennews.ng, the General Manager of the LSPWC, Engineer Ayotunde Sodeinde confirmed the agency’s latest work at the Iyana Ipaja road.

Engr. Sodeinde said when completed, the road would be tarred and motorist can enjoy their ride along the route.

“The water is destroying the road, which is why we are currently addressing the drainage challenge by building a new and bigger drainage channel.

Engr. Sodeinde also confirmed that there is a certain drainage which had been blocked and this is the major problem of the road.

Being a federal road, all effort to reach the Federal Roads Maintenance Agency (FERMA) proved abortive, as emails sent to the agency’s official email was not attended to and calls failed to connect.
