Justice Danladi Umar is in the news again but this time it's for the wrong reason. Few Nigerian's knew this young amiable Chairman of the Code of Conduct Tribunal until the now famous trial of the Senate President (Bukola Saraki) over his false declaration of assets. In the trial of Saraki, Justice Umar thrived and succeeded where others have failed and it was shocking and at the same time exciting to see that justice was served to every Nigerian no matter their political or social status. While the trial is still ongoing, It has been discovered that Umar who should be upholding justice is embroiled in a #10 million bribery scandal. The said bribery was perpetrated long before the new administration and it had generated much heat to the extent that the then two other judges of the tribunal (Robert Odu and Agwaza Atedze) copied a letter to the former President Goodluck Jonathan on the bribery issue and even refused sitting with Umar.

It has been revealed by the EFCC that Umar had not only demanded but also received the sum of #1.8 million (first tranche of the #10 million) from a former Deputy Controller General of Customs (Taiwo Rasheed) while he was arraigned and tried for false declaration of assets. The said sum was paid to the Zenith Bank account of Gambo Abdullahi who is Umar's Personal Assistant. It is a common knowledge that a Man who tries others for corruption should have a clean slate and this has been breached by the allegations on Justice Umar. Corruption cannot fight corruption and from the recent events the trial of the No3 citizen of the Country by the scandal ridden Umar seems like the case of kettle calling pot black.

While it has not yet been established, the case of Ibrahim Lamorde of the EFCC who was booted out of office due to a similar allegations comes to mind. What not only the ruling party but also the oppostion and masses must understand is that Justice Umar has lost the moral decorum to head such paramount Anti- Corruption Institution and must be booted out by two thirds National Assembly majority support and also Presidential directive as the constitution makes it impossible for the President to relieve him of his duties. The continued stay of Umar with a corruption scandal hovering around his head doesn't speak well for an administration that has made the fight against corruption it's priority. Nigerians irrespective of party affiliation must unite to fight the Demons of Corruption which has eroded all progress we might have made since independence. Saraki must be tried but Umar must be booted out for a clean person to continue the Anti Corruption Crusade .
