PUBLIC SECURITY
Public security can be said to be the protection of citizens, organizations and institution in a given country against threats to their nation. It is the responsibility of government and public institutions to address possible threat in advance and use most economical measure to reach or attain public security. This paper seeks to point out some reason for Nigeria’s failure in public security and proffer or suggest some possible solution.
In record times the crime rate within Nigeria has become so alarming and catastrophic that some part of the nation has become a death zone. Vice like arm robbery, suicide bombing, kidnapping etc. has made so much headline that the people of Nigeria don’t sleep with their both eyes close.
Public security is currently at its lowest rating in Nigeria and public confidence in government to secure the lives and properties of the citizen is eclipsed by the constant horror narrated in the news media as criminal elements carry out their inhuman deed.
The justice system in Nigeria does not help matters where cases that are against public security are treated with kid’s glove and the snail speed process of dispensing justice makes the public dreadful of the courts.
The unwillingness of the executive to clamp down on corruption gives voice to the public perception that government does not care about them.
The down turn of the economy also worsen the case as most individual especially in the rural areas live far below the standard poverty line hence will do anything to make ends meet.
Public security in Nigeria can best be described as a fail venture as the government has not effectively addressed possible threats to pubic security let alone adequately protect its citizens.
I think the government will do well to better equip the existing enforcers of the law, increase their motivation and renumeration so that there would be greater willingness on their part to enforce the laws legally.
Also I think the political class should attend to issue of public interest with moral responsibility and develop a sort of a human face to the matters that bother on public security.
The high level of politicizing of the social and economic issue that affect the nation, in my opinion should be stopped so that issues can be looked at objective and best acceptable solution can be found to matters like the hydra-headed Boko-Haram terrorism so that the public can feel secure again.
