If your parents were married at the time of your birth and your father was a British citizen then; you will automatically be British too.

If your parents were not married at the time of your birth but later married, you will be entitled to British citizenship but it may be by Registration though should only be a formality.

I think the Nationality Act changed recently (July 2006) to also allow children born to British fathers who were not married to the mother at the time of birth to be registered as British citizens as well. This is regardless of year of birth as long as they are named on the child's BC or can prove they are the child's father otherwise. You should clarify on the nationality website- http://www.ukba.homeoffice.gov.uk/sitecontent/documents/britishcitizenship/informationleaflets/

And from July 2006, children born to unmarried fathers are automatically British citizens.

Whatever the case as long as your father was a British citizen when you were born, you are entitled to British Citizenship one way or the other. If you are based outside the UK, you should contact the British embassy/High Commission where you are. If you are in the UK, call the Nationality helpline 0845 010 5200.

Good luck and I'd say the earlier you sort it out the better.

And I forgot to add, if your father is a British Citizen by descent (i.e. he acquired citizenship through his parents) and you were born outside the UK or its qualifying terriroties, you will have to apply for citizenship by Registration; it is not automatic even if your parents were married when you were born.
