As former president Goodluck Jonathan against all intrests, accepted the result of the Jegga led Inec which in ramifications, contained numerous elements of doubt. Like the video footages of underaged votters in areas where the oposition had commanding influence; 2; The uneven distribution of election materials which depicted partiality in the umpire's disposition. Forinstance, the insurgence ravaged northeast recocorded more acquisition of card readers than the peaceful southeast and south south regions where the incumbent had grounds. And many more causes for doubt of the umpire's rationality. The world came to professor Atahiru Jegga's praise for conducting the most credible election in Nigeria. But with the resent manner of disqualifications of mandates by the tribunals; How can we still acertain the credibility of the Jegga led Inec? Is Jegga just sitting down saying nothing to all these insult to his image? |

The credibility of the umpire and his/her is mostly hinged on logistics, accreditation, transparency and good record keeping etc. The electorate has a vital role in respecting the rule of law, civil and civic conduct with the aim of making the exercise as painless as possible. The act of violence, intimidation, stuffing and snatching of ballot etc. Isn't really something an umpire can help. These endemic acts of malpractice necessitates the drafting of ad-hoc electoral security using the Police, Soldiers and Nscdc (oga at the top ) etc. Parties encourage their agents to record the conduct at the booth/ ward local level. Adjudication on the true state of the election is left for the courts, tribunals etc. Each and every element of the election has its role. The conduct of election is dependent on all and cannot solely lie at the foot of the umpire. The attitude of the electorate and parties must be positive for a positive outcome. Only then can the umpire and tribunal be held liable for any deviation. 1 Like |
