Light Amplification by the Systemic Emmission of Radiation(LASER) technology is becoming the in thing now in the field of modern warfare.
Very cheap and in exhaustible concentration of energy focused towards a given target. Definitely cheaper than missiles.
I am sure the US, who have the most advance laser technology in the world must be working on an ICBM model which would be mind blowing, both scientifically and militarily.

Laser beam is not and will never be the best form of space defence.
Firstly, it requires a lot of energy to flash laser - take for example, The new America Zumwalt ship that is said to be equipped with laser weapon generates a lot of energy could be used to power about 10,000 homes. Laser weapon is a huge deal and that's why it won't be easy to fit them on fighter jets.
Secondly, Laser weapons have small space range at which they can be effective unlike missiles which can be fired and move hundreds of kilometers away. But I think the highest range of laser beam is around 6km which won't be good to defend against subsonic missiles.
