No fewer than 15 Agatu farmers were killed by unidentified Fulani men in the Udeni Ruwa district of Nasarawa State, while five others were drowned as they tried to escape during the clash.

It was learnt that the suspected Fulani herdsmen invaded two settlements in the Udeni Ruwa district on Sunday night, burning down scores of houses in the area.

But the Police Public Relations Officer, Nasarawa State Command, Ismaila Umaru, who confirmed the incident to our correspondent in a telephone interview in Lafia, the state capital, said seven people were killed and scores of houses were burned during the attack.

According to him, the attack on Agatu farmers was a reprisal by the Fulani herdsmen who took their cows for grazing in the area. He said this followed a report that three Fulani herdsmen were missing.

He said, “There was a report that three of the Fulani cattle rearers who took their cows for grazing on Agatu farm got missing, while the corpse of one of the Fulani men was found.”

The police spokesperson, however, added that the command had already deployed its men to the scene of the event to avoid a break down of law and order.

“The command had already sent additional reinforcement of security agents to the area and normalcy had since returned. There was no arrest so far made by the police in the state,” he added.

A source, who did not want his name to be mentioned, said that the invaders who launched an attack on Okpaya, a riverine village, were Fulani herdsmen.

According to the source, the attackers burnt a part of Udeni Ruwa and killed 15 persons. He said five of the victims were from Okpaya and the 10 others were from Udeni Ruwa.

“My brother, it is unfortunate. Fulani people attacked Okpaya and killed five of our people. They burnt down the entire village and attacked some persons in Udeni.

“They killed three people and all of us from Okpaya ran to neighbouring villages. The most annoying part is that a family man lost his wife and three children while they were on their way to Loko, through a boat,” the source lamented.

The source added that the attackers invaded Okpaya village at night around 11pm on Sunday. He said the entire village was razed by the attackers.

Udeni Ruwa district is the boundary between Nasarawa and Benue states.

Following the incident, residents from nearby villages of Ogoboh, Akum, Kpandera, Akpanaja and Amaku are now living in fear.

Already, some have relocated their children and their aged relatives to neighbouring communities.

The only difference between these Fulani herdsmen and their cattle is just in the number of legs.

How did we get here?

Simple...and FYI....it does not have to do with your uncle Bubu

The problem is that in a country where most people are subsitence farmers, and where the local government does not know the meaning of the word ''Land Management'', and where cattle herders think that roaming around with your cattle is still the beat policy.....forgetting that population is increasing, and as a result the availability of free land for grazing is decreasing....yes such disasters are bound to happen.

You must note that the Fulanis attacked because they were attacked. Three of their men died. Yet....your hate for FUlanis makes you see them as some sort of ''forest spirits'' that do unreasonable things. It hardly crosses your mind that they too are being attakced.

But I am not here to defend the Fulani....and even if their men died...it is better to report it to the police rather than take the laws into their own hands.(And that leads me to the poor state of the Police in our rural areas. Where was the Police? ).

The problem is not the Fulanis.

The problem is

1.Poor land management practices.

2.Poor education....which means that we have two groups of illiterates who think that shilfting cultivation and cattle herding are viable means of agriculture in an era of growing population and climate change.

3.Poor policing. The reason why people take the laws into their own hands is because the Law is not busy doing its job.

In my opinion, Bubu's agric, law and interior ministers,as well as the state and LGA chairmen should be up and doing. They should sort out the problems here. So that....at the end of the day we can all live in peace.

Instead of calling for the expulsion of the Fulani in language that is reminiscent of the anti-Semitic drivel of the Nazis.....or the cockroach laden language of Rwandan Hutu extremists.

Time we ended subsistence farming....and cattle herding in this country. Times have changed. It isn't the 12th century anymore.

No compensation was given to all those who lost their loved ones in Obi LG in Nasarawa 2014..after fulani herdsmen invaded and killed more than 100 of Eggon tribe..
No punishment was given to herdsmen , instead police decided to arrest and kill eggon youths that resulted in a serious clash in Nassarawa eggon and lafia province.
I dont expect much from the Governor when he actually married a fulani woman.
Jona did nothing , would it be a brukutu fulani man that would hurt his brother ?

Don't mind him, Shiites only blocked the road and the NA wasted over 300 of them. But Fulani herdsmen has been wasting lives ever since God knows when and NA will never fight them or kill them back because NA is made up of Fulani.

Same idiotic goats that asked for the Shiite leader and other Shiite members to be wasted will never come here to condemn these killings.

It's hightime the fulani herders are taught a very big lesson. This is not cute anymore.

I'm a Buharist to the core but if he doesn't check the lawlessness of these vampires, then I might be compelled to invoke the wrath of Obatala on him & his entire family - I kid you not!

And we have a president that hasn't deemed it fit to address this menace that has occurs with alarming frequency under his watch! We also have security agencies that are only after collecting bribe and arresting political enemies... If the people take up arms now in a counter-offensive or in self defence u will see them being arrested and killed because the president is of the same fulani extraction.
In a country where a so-called 'Chief Security Officer a.k.a Governor is absolutely unable to take measures to secure his constituents and citizens of the state, it is shameful. In a country where police officers have no initiatives beyond orders from above, it is also absolutely disgusting. It is totally beyond the realm of common sense and logic that where issues like this occur the affected citizens are confronted with having to hold the 'almighty' FG responsible because all their Governor can do towards contributing to their security and protection is donate cars to the police command in his state.

The real CHANGE will be confronting the status quo and restructuring this unwholesome alliance called Nigeria as presently constituted. The people need to be able to govern and secure themselves via regional and state policing and then hold their direct leaders responsible/accountable for any mishaps. Power needs to be devolved to the regions because the FG/Central government is vested with too much power and control hence the tendency to display tyrannical tendencies as they deem fit and as already observed in the current dispensation.

Until the truth is told and evils confronted, Nigeria is not getting any better. Fight corruption from now till eternity, this current structure is corruption personified so all efforts are programmed to fail even before they take off. There are parasites who enjoy this dead federalism so people will keep comparing and citing international best practices but it just never comes to reality here. That is why there will always be a perception of being cheated and being denied rightful recognition and positions because the system is programmed to favour a certain class who happen to 'capture' power.

In other words, these herdsmen will continue being evil and provided the powers from above do not lean towards addressing the issues, the states affected sit and do next to nothing. What little can be done is already excused due to failure to plan properly...
Nigeria must be restructured or component units must then break apart freely and form countries of their own. One Nigeria remains a mantra of bondage and unfortunately, a majority do not recognise their bonds for what they are!

How possible is it to burn down an entire village? Or were they just exaggerating?
How many houses are there that will all be burnt down in one single attack and are there no Abel bodied young men with courage in them to fight back the shame coming to there land?

If a brother commits a crime, the family should come out and condemn the act. This way, the society would know that the family isn't party to the crime. But if the family remains silent, then don't blame the community if they accuse the family of insensitivity.

This fulani herdsmen seem to be well sponsored and motivated by their elites. This explains why they've always remained arrogant and hostile to all communities that hosts them. Have you wondered why no fulani elites have ever condemned them? Ruminate on that.

I wonder why these Fulani ne'er-do-wells are allowed to freely carry and brandish deadly weapons and yet part of Nnamdi Kanu's offence is supposedly soliciting for weapons!! Are people then expected to remain as sitting ducks while a 'hallowed' tribe is allowed to pillage, destroy and kill at will? They must be checked at some point, by law or force!

Leaving aside the fact that the herdsmen too are being attacked, and their cattle stolen as well.....let's see....

You are saying that we should divide Nigeria and as a result, fulani cattle herders would stop attacking farmers.

Hilarious.

In the first instance....many of those Fulani did not start wandering when Nigeria became an independent state. They were wandering long before there was a Nigeria....and long before there was some African empires too. A few more borders are not going to stop them...especially when the Sahara is pushing down.(I am not fulani BTW....and I think that they should stop herding cattle. That era is long over).

Second....how does splitting Nigeria protect the farmers in this case? How does it answer the questions of poor land management, and illiteracy that are the real cause of the problems fuelling the current crisis?

Stop using a power screwdriver....when a simple hammer would have worked.
