geez, Nigerians are too sensitive! If a parent gives a child a name that will make them the butt of jokes by their peers, then there's nothing wrong with changing such names! To whatever you like. And on these kind of threads you never see any of these native name warriors attacking Africans who have Arabic names! |

I have a friend dating this guy called Dominic they were on the bridge of becoming lovers and they couldnt keep things from each other anymore so turned out this guy's original name is sanjo and she was actually turned off by his name, and everything concerning him just din't appeal to her anymore and they finally broke up today. so made me think about how uncool our names can be sometimes. but some parent aswell just name their kids anyhow, new couple just had a baby and her name is prayer I dont know about you but geez i love to pray and it's good but naming a child one is just crossing the line when she starts school in this english community the name will raise few brows. i also remembered a woman where i used to live also had a child called jesu-gbeshumi (jesus swalloed satan) in this london is this not a little over the top? The babe simply didn't want to have anything to to with a fake, low self esteem, colo mental guy. Form Obasanjo to freaging sanjo and then from sanjo to Dominic. Tufia! Your friend needs to give you the treatment next i also remembered a woman where i used to live also had a child called jesu-gbeshumi (jesus swalloed satan) in this london is this not a little over the topClowns like you wouldn't have voted for Barak Obama. You'd have been thing, "what a f.ucked up name". Shame on you. |

High level of inferiority complex worries many nigerians.so a girl broke up with his boyfriend because his name is sonjo either the girl was looking for a way to break up with the guy or she is an immature ram! |

Re: Do You Like Your Full Name Why Do Nigerians Have So Many Wierd Names by Beaf: 3:44pm On Jul 11, 2009 |
tpia.: No, he grew up as barry. Then he realised as a college student that "barry" had nothing to do with his identity. I can bet you that as barry, he would have at most ended up as a non-executive, senior staff member in some none-descript firm. Being true to your identity creates a projection of strength. |
Re: Do You Like Your Full Name Why Do Nigerians Have So Many Wierd Names by Nobody: 3:54pm On Jul 11, 2009 |
Beaf: Is this strength reflected in Africa's current state today? I have nothing against native names, but we Africans tend to place too much emphasis on things that dont matter. Look at the amount of energy people spend abusing others for not having indigenous names "like them". Must everybody have the same kind of name? Having traditional names doesnt give you the right to ridicule and abuse others who dont for whatever reason. If you're really happy with your native name, then why spend so much time getting upset about other people's own? Shows something is wrong somewhere. On Obama: more like he was told Barak would suit his projected image better. |

Beaf: when you hear Barak Obama what image does your mind project? Arabic/Middle eastern how many Africans know what Obama means or even heard the name before Barak ran for office? Ngugi Wa Thiongo is an example of an indigenous African name. When I hear sanjo Dominic what mental image does my mind project? Nigerians raining curses on Obasanjo and his lineage. |

Obama's name are African (except for Hussein) "Obama" is a name from the Luo ethnic group of southwestern Kenya, where Barack Obama, Sr. was born. It was originally the given name of Barack Obama's great-grandfather. It is based on the Luo (technically, Dholuo, the name of the language of the Luo) word bam, which means "crooked, slightly bending." The prefix O- means "he," and many Luo male names begin with it. Since most traditional Luo names were given by the baby's mother referring to something about the child's birth, the best guess is that when Obama's great-grandfather was born, one of his arms or legs looked slightly bent. However,Email rumors have charged that U.S. President Barack Obama is a practing Muslim, a rumor that has since been proven false. However, President Obama does have an unusual name, which reflects his African Muslim heritage. He was reportedly named after his father, Barack Hussein Obama, Sr. The president's first name, Barack, is a Swahili name that has its origins in Arabic. The original Arabic root of the name (B-R-K) means "blessed." In Arabic, the root word is used in many other phrases to denote blessings and to describe people who are blessed: http://wiki.answers.com/Q/What_is_the_meaning_of_the_name_%27Obama%27 |

this thread is still cracking me up o. I just keep running the OP's scenario in my head. Imagine this, one day you're sititng with your girl just chilling, next minute your parents call ur phone and she overhears them saying 'omo sanjo', lol, you finish talking with ur parents and she's packed her things on her way out, LOL, first of all, is dominic even a cool name to begin with? lol, i'd understand if the guy went from something sophisticated like wenthworth to omo sanjo, but dominic? africans take ourselves too seriously though. we are not the only ones who adopt easier to pronounce names. the chinese for example do it too. and they are even worse cus they pick the names straight from pop culture. i can't tell you how many middle aged chinese men i've met with names like justin and spencer, lol, like really? spencer? lol, no seriously my ex boss went by spencer Xi, lol, hilarious. |

Religious fanaticism and funny religious beliefs made people to give their children funny names meanwhile have seen a lot of Jesu gbotemi, Oluwaramipada, Oluwaponmile, and so on ending up as Indian hemp smoker. Meanwhile the girl that leave a guy because he is bearing Sanjo is very stupid and childish the name is a beautiful Yoruba meaning that she will not date any guy bearing Ajani, Akande, Banjo, Dele, Kayode, Korede. As for myself have got names that am always proud of TEMITOPE OLUWASEUN any babe that decide to leave me cos of my name threw away a pot of gold. REAL MEN NO BE BY NAME OOO! |
Re: Do You Like Your Full Name Why Do Nigerians Have So Many Wierd Names by Nobody: 5:14pm On Jul 11, 2009 |
Witi: I'm Yoruba and the only Sanjo I never met anyone else with that name. I'm not saying I would dump someone for their name. More like I wouldnt let myself get romantically involved with them in the first place. Just remain friends and thats it. Yoruba traditional names like Ajani and Akande tend to be people's middle names, if they're younger than 40. Ajase, Apeke, Ayinla, Aremu etc are rarely used as first names these days. They're more likely to be middle or last names. Not to mention how many people even know what these names mean? I certainly dont. Nothing wrong with the other names on the list. At least you can easily decipher the meaning and they're not hard to pronounce. And who said they have a problem with Temitope Oluwaseun? I dont know why Nigerians are so sensitive! Whatever name you've got, live with it. If its too outrageous or makes you the target of bullies, then by all means change it. |
Re: Do You Like Your Full Name Why Do Nigerians Have So Many Wierd Names by agathamari(f): 5:41pm On Jul 11, 2009 |
I am from the US and white (Irish) living here in Nigeria. I don’t even have an English name nor does anyone in my family (mine is German). I have found it quite amusing that people name their children patience and yet I have never met a single person in Nigeria who actually has any patience. Traditional names are one thing but naming your child things like goodluck, happiness, snow, stainless, miracle, wisdom, power? Those odd “white names” names like sun, rain, moon, and the like are a Chinese tradition determined by birthrights and are pronounced in Chinese. BTW Chinese people are NOT white! Romeo is a traditional Italian name dating back to the 13th century. Brooklyn and Zola are also Italian names though not as old. Sirius is a Greek name and is over 3500 years old. Ivy is old English. The boy's name Barack is of Hebrew origin, and its meaning is "lightning". Biblical: a valiant warrior who cooperated with the prophetess Deborah to win victory in a battle against overwhelming odds. The boy's name Barric is of English origin and its meaning is "grain farm". Place name. The boy's name Mubarak is of Muslim/Arabic origin and its meaning is blessed, fortunate. Mubarak is from Baraka (to bless) Last names in Europe were dictated by your position (some must be translated into English it make sense). The Nobles were names for their looks. The working class were named for their jobs. Someone with the last name of bush or forest would have gathered timber. Bakers baked, Thatcher’s made roofs, smith worked with metals. Bastard children depending on the father were named for the city of birth (if the father was rich) Leonardo de Vinci mean Leonardo from Vinci the city where he was born. Those whose fathers were in the same social class as the mother took the fathers first name as his/her last name. McArthur, O’Brien, Wilson (Mc, Mac and O mean son of). Getting the hint? |

I feel Sanjo is better off without the lady, because the name 'Sanjo' is a really lovely Yoruba name & he should be proud of it. Whle I understand 'jesugbesumi' and the rest may be going a bit far,but one of the priviledges of parenting is naming one's children . . . .like Obama once joked, his father probably gave him the name 'Hussein' not knowing he'd ever contest for US presidency . Haven said that, every country has its fair share of 'strange' names |
