Kanuri Speakers by BeansAndBread(m): 6:45pm On Feb 29, 2016 |
Good day guys Many focus mainly on the three main tribes but not on others. As we all know, Kanuris constitute a large amount in the country and their contributions to Nigeria's history is very great. It'll be very fascinating if we could teach ourselves this language, I'm looking forward to learn! 1 Like |

Interesting thread. Kanuri are indeed under-studied. Hausa people call them "beri-beri" and often I wonder if it's not a contraction of the arabic "barbariy", which refers to the Berber populations. 2 Likes |

Re: Kanuri Speakers by Fulaman198(m): 2:38am On Mar 01, 2016 |
GorkoSusaay: The interesting thing is that Kanuris are closer related to Nubians than Berbers. In Nigeria, we Fulani have a special relation/joke that we share with the Kanuri roflllll. With that said, the president of Chad, Idriss Deby, is from a Kanuri sub-group. 2 Likes |

Re: Kanuri Speakers by Fulaman198(m): 7:13pm On Mar 01, 2016 |
scholes0: Not really, depends on how you look at it. In Niger republic and Chad it's widely spoken. In fact, The president of Chad is Kanuri |
Re: Kanuri Speakers by Wulfruna(f): 7:42pm On Mar 01, 2016 |
Fulaman198: I thought he was Zaghawa. Does this mean that Zaghawa is a sub-group of Kanuri? Someone explain the ethnic composition of that whole area to me, because it is a bit confusing. Like, what is the relationship of Kanuri, Kanembu, Zaghawa to each other - are they all the same people? |
Re: Kanuri Speakers by scholes0(m): 8:21pm On Mar 01, 2016 |
Fulaman198: Idris Debby is not Kanuri o.... he is Zaghawa. And even in Chad and Niger, their languages is still endangered by Hausa and Chadian Arabic. |

scholes0: Zaghawa is a subgroup of Kanuri. You should know that many ethnic groups consist of many subgroups. It's like saying I'm not Fulani, I'm a Mbororojo, they are one in the same. "The Kanemite royal history, the Girgam, refers to the Zaghawa people as the Duguwa. Today, Zaghawa refer to themselves as the Beri",. As you know, the Hausa term for Kanuri is Beri-Beri |
