Africa’s first major music video channel, Channel O has announced the nominees for the 2009 Channel O Music Video Awards at a press conference at Melrose Arch, Johannesburg.

channelo1This year adding to that is the re-introduction of the category – Most Gifted Afro-Pop Video. Like Most Gifted Kwaito, this category celebrates a uniquely African music style .

“We are the biggest supporters of African music and wanted to extend that by re-introducing this category,” comments Yolisa Phahle, Channel Director: Special Interests at M-Net. “Afro-Pop is a brilliant example of a uniquely African music style that easily finds audiences around the continent and we hope that the platform it gets in the awards will bring more fans to the genre.”

As in previous years, winners in the Channel O Music Video Awards are chosen by the public who will be able to make their voices heard via SMS or online. The 2009 Channel O Music Video Awards, brought to you by Amarula Cream, take place on Thursday 29 October at Carnival City in Gauteng.
