Jobless Graduate Sues College For Tuition Fees Because She Can't Find A Job. by krispoly(m): 9:31pm On Aug 04, 2009 |
She has given new meaning to a class-action lawsuit. Trina Thompson gave it the old college try, but couldn't find work. Now she thinks her sheepskin wasn't worth her time, and is suing her alma mater for her money back. The Monroe College grad wants the $70,000 she spent on tuition because she hasn't found gainful employment since earning her bachelor's degree in April, according to a suit filed in Bronx Supreme Court on July 24. The 27-year-old alleges the business-oriented Bronx school hasn't lived up to its end of the bargain, and has not done enough to find her a job. The information-technology student blames Monroe's Office of Career Advancement for not providing her with the leads and career advice it promised. "They have not tried hard enough to help me," the frustrated Bronx resident wrote about the school in her lawsuit. "She's angry," said Thompson's mother, Carol. "She's very angry at her situation. She put all her faith in them, and so did I. They're not making an effort. "She's finally finished [with school], and I'm so proud of her. She just wants a job." The mother and daughter live together, but are struggling to get by. Carol, a substitute teacher, has been the only breadwinner. "This is not the way we want to live our life," the mom said. "This is not what we planned." As if being unemployed weren't enough, Trina's student loans are coming due, saddling the family with more debt, the mom said. "We're going to be homeless, and we'll still have a student loan to pay," Carol said. Monroe insists it helps graduates in their careers. "The lawsuit is completely without merit," school spokesman Gary Axelbank said. "The college prides itself on the excellent career-development support that we provide to each of our students, and this case does not deserve further consideration." The college's Office of Career Advancement advertises lifetime free service for graduates, and boasts on the school's Web site: "We have many resources available for students at any stage of their college career, and even after graduation." Im loving this. Can anyone recommend any good lawyer for me to sue Ogun State University? Actually they have case to answer for not informing me that my 4 years course will take me 6 years and few months and that after graduation i will still be roaming the streets of Lagos with no job, and why didnt they inform me some employers will want to have a 'taste' of me as a female before giving me job? |

Foolish reply to a sensible post. I don't know when Nigerians will learn what HUMAN RIGHTS are. That is why many of you are roaming the street, 6 year post NYSC and is folding hands doing nothing about it. Don't you empty headed fools know that when the court rules in her favor, other schools will gear up and ensure that they train their students to be self-sufficient after school. You people need a course on Human rights, from Kindergarten to Phd level. Always read and reflect before posting shits! |

True @Must_a_far, I noticed that some schools have been advertising such. I think I heard the same claim from devry the other day too. Maybe this will put an end to that craze. |

The suit is in order as we see a lot of organisations and institutions rip people off while making promises they may never fulfill. People face the same thing here where IT training outfits advertise dream jobs for people that go through the schools. When I talk to people wanting to enroll I ask them to tell the school to offer them scholarships and recoup the money when they must have provided jobs after graduation since they are so sure of providing jobs for them. People get away with a lot of things and it is certainly not right. However, in this case only the actual terms of the contract would matter so if for some reasons the promise for a job was not written down in black and white or if the loan so collected was never tied to the condition of a job then she will only succeed in drawing attention to schools and training outfits with promises of jobs after graduation and people would be wiser going forward. |

Afam: I think I would disagree with youe here. The issue is this - ab initio, does she have the locus standi to institute the case against the school? And like you rightly said towards the end of your post - anything that is not written down and signed in Law of Contract is baseless before the court of law as my word against yours is very dificult to substantiate in the court. I think hse might just be waisting her time. |
