Gombe: 50-Year-old man rapes 14-year-old girl

The rising cases of rape of minors in Gombe State, due to the erroneous belief that such could cure HIV/AIDS among men, has not abated as a 50-year-old man, Ibrahim Chindo, has allegedly raped a 14-year-old girl and infected her with HIV/AIDS.[/b]

This disclosure was made by the Gombe State Commander of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Altine Sani Umar, in an interview with newsmen in Gombe.

Umar explained that the man reportedly raped the innocent girl, Fatima Umar, in Kumo town of Akko Local Government Area, when she went to him to buy mangoes for her petty trading.

She further explained that even though the rape suspect,Chindo had confessed to committing the offence and offered to marry the girl, her parents had vehemently opposed the idea of any wedding between them, saying he should have first sought the consent of the parents in marrying the girl before engaging in the nefarious act.

Umar who said that the case was still being investigated, however revealed that the corps record between two to three cases of rape daily while between 15 to 20 were recorded monthly.

The commander who expressed dismay over the rising wave of rape in the State, wondered why men between the age of 50 and 70 were mostly involved in raping innocent girls, sometimes as young as seven years.

Narrating her experience, Fatima told newsmen that Chindo seduced her into his house on three occasions where he raped her and gave her N200 worth of mangoes in excess of the one she went to buy.

Upon interrogation, the suspected rapist accepted committing the offence and begged for leniency, saying that he was pushed into to the act by the devil, promising that such a thing will not happen again in his life, calling on others with such motives to learn a lesson from his ordeal now.
