Question For Medical Lab. Scientists by Nobody: 9:44am On Jun 15, 2016
Medical Lab. Scientists or any person conversant with laboratory test procedures, I need your help with this issue.

I did a lab test, of which liver panel is amongst them. When I received the result, I noticed that the company's reference ranges for both AST and ALT are (up to 12 U/L), with my result showing 17 U/L for ALT and 19 U/L for AST.

I was confused, as I taught that universally, the normal range for ALT and AST are usually around 10-50 U/L. Why (up to 12 U/L) for this company's?

Can anyone educate me why they have their range as (up to 12 U/L) for both the ALT and AST? They could not give me a satisfying answer for this discrepancy. Are my ALT and AST values normal or high based on this discrepancy?

They told me they use Randox reagents for their tests. However, I went to Randox website, and it stated the range for their ALT and AST around the universal range I mentioned above.

I am grateful for any educated insight on this matter.

Did you ask them if that's their range? Sometimes it could be computational error while preparing the laboratory request form but that nontheless it should be corrected before issuance.

Yes I did. I queried the chief lab scientist on the discrepancy. She said this is their own range, which does not make sense. She was saying things like endpoint procedures and kinetic method, confusing me the more.

I am very concerned, as I have to closely monitor my liver enzymes.

What she was trying to explain is dis maybe that's their working reference range after carefully calculating the values (These values are always reviewed). Some places (Teaching Hospital) u see AST range as (5-18iu/L) and ALT as (3-15iu/L).
