The Raising of Chicago

The city of Chicago was raised by several feet during the 1860's without disrupting daily life or businesses closing down to solve a drainage problem. Entire buildings, shopping centers, sidewalks and hotels were all lifted up manually by laborers using jack-screws while people went about their daily lives, shopped and dined. In one case, a large hotel was raised off the ground even while guests stayed on oblivious of what was going on underneath them:

"....one patron was puzzled to note that the front steps leading from the street into the hotel were becoming steeper every day and that when he checked out, the windows were several feet above his head, whereas before they had been at eye level. This huge hotel, which until just the previous year had been the tallest building in Chicago, was in fact raised fully 6 feet (1.8 m) without a hitch."

Mithilesh Kumar Srivastava, better known as Natwarlal (1912-2009), was a noted Indian con man known for having repeatedly "sold" the Taj Mahal, the Red Fort, and the Rashtrapati Bhavan and also the Parliament House of India along with its 545 sitting members. He was a living-legend in his lifetime and a legend even after his death.
He was born in Bangra village in Siwan district of Bihar, by profession he was a lawyer before he turned into a conman.
He had duped hundreds of people of crores of rupees and used more than 50 aliases to disguise himself. He was a master of disguises and used novel ideas to cheat and was also a master in forging signatures of famous personalities. He is also said to have cheated number of industrialists including the Tatas, the Birlas and also Dhirubhai Ambani taking from them huge money in cash, posing as social worker or needy person. Also he had duped many shop-owners with lakhs of rupees, paying them by chequeand demand drafts, which were later found to be forged.
Natwarlal was wanted in more than 100 cases and he was wanted by 8 states police and was sentenced to 113 years in prison. However, he made daring escapes from different jails eight times in his life.
Natwarlal was arrested nine times but every time was able to break out of jail and run away. The last time he was arrested was in 1996 and was 84 years old at that time. But he managed to again give the police a slip and was last seen by authorities on June 24, 1996; when the wheelchair-using octogenarian vanished while being transported from prison to a hospital for treatment. He disappeared at New Delhi railway station, when he was being taken to AIIMS, under police escort from Kanpur jail for his treatment, after which he was never seen by anyone.

You get a permanent tattoo on getting struck by a lightning.

Lichtenberg Figures: The Fractal Patterns of Lightning Strike Scars

Being struck by lightning is a dangerous and scary experience and can even be fatal. Sometimes, the electrical discharge can leave a tattoo-like marking or scar known as a Lichtenberg figure. The patterns created are known to be examples of fractals.

Lichtenberg figures are branching electric discharges that sometimes appear on the surface or the interior of insulating materials. They are named after the German physicist Georg Christoph Lichtenberg, who originally discovered and studied them. When they were first discovered, it was thought that their characteristic shapes might help to reveal the nature of positive and negative electric “fluids”.

In 1777, Lichtenberg built a large electrophorus to generate high voltage static electricity through induction. After discharging a high voltage point to the surface of an insulator, he recorded the resulting radial patterns in fixed dust. By then pressing blank sheets of paper onto these patterns, Lichtenberg was able to transfer and record these images, thereby discovering the basic principle of modern Xerography. This discovery was also the forerunner of modern day plasma physics.

Although Lichtenberg only studied 2-dimensional (2D) figures, modern high voltage researchers study 2D and 3D figures (electrical trees) on, and within, insulating materials [Souce: Wikipedia].

A mantis shrimp can swing its claw so fast it boils the water around it and creates a flash of light.

The temperature produced can reach up-to temperature of SUN momentarily!!!

They have two club-shaped appendages near their face that can punch out faster than a .22 caliber bullet( acceleration of 102,000 m/s2 and speeds of 23 m/s from a standing start) to smash and break apart their prey (usually mollusks and crabs) and even glass.

They can punch with enough force that the surrounding water boils in a process known as supercavitation. The bubbles caused by this supercavitation collapse instantly, but not before giving off a shockwave of heat (thousands of Kelvins high) and light (sonoluminescence) to confuse and boil the prey. This Shockwave has a force in order of 1,500 newtons .

If we had the same amount of force as the Mantis Shrimp, we could throw small objects into orbit. Imagine being a crab and seeing this beast of a shrimp come after you; even if the Mantis Shrimp misses blowing you to pieces with its bullet gloves of death, the atomic shockwave that follows the punch will still boil you alive.

The first confrontation between the German Nazis and the Soviet Union took place in 1937 in Paris, France .

The first fight between Hitler and Stalin was an architectural battle, which took place in Paris, a few hundred yards from the Eiffel Tower.

Albert Speer, Adolf Hitler's chief architect, designed the German Pavilion for the 1937 international exposition in Paris. The German and Soviet pavilion sites were opposite each other. On learning - through a clandestine look at the Soviet plans - that the Soviet design included two colossal figures seemingly about to overrun the German site, Speer modified his design to include a cubic mass which would check their advance, with a huge eagle on top looking down on the Soviet figures. Both pavilions were awarded gold medals for their design.

About 50% of all US presidents have been left-handed (or ambidextrous). We didn't really track the handedness of presidents before the early 20th century (it was considered a disability), but there is evidence that earlier presidents were also left-handed. For example, Garfield was apparently able to simultaneously write Latin with his right hand and Greek with his left.

The lightning marks look so beautiful.

Like hernia dye that is fading. The designs look like trees or leaves.

The entire human race would fit in the volume of a sugar cube.

This is because matter is incredibly,mind-boggling empty. An atom, the basic building block of matter, is like a miniature Solar System with electrons orbiting a “nucleus” like planets circling the Sun. But the nucleus at the center is incredibly tiny compared with the orbits of the electrons. This means that, if you squeezed all the empty space out of all the atoms in all the people in the world, you could fit the entire human race in the volume of a sugar cube. You and me and everyone else are 99.9999999999999 per cent empty space!

The Lost People and The Forbidden Island

In this era where we are trying to make contact with the people in outer space, you might be astonished to know that we still have people here on Earth which are far from any contact with modern people. They reject any contact with other people, and are among the last people to remain virtually untouched by modern civilization. The inhabitants of North Sentinel Island, Sentinelese are noted for vigorously resisting attempts at contact by outsiders.

If any group of people qualifies for the term "lost tribe" it is the Sentinelese. They have managed to live for thousands of years near one of the most ancient sea routes while avoiding any influence from outside civilizations.

They respond with intense hostility at any attempt of outside contact, hurling arrows and stones at any unlucky visitor approaching their shores. There has been no evidence of agricultural practices even methods of producing fire. Their language remains unknown.

The Sentinelese even survived the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, the deadliest in recorded history, with few or no casualties. Though the tsunami killed more than 230,000 people in surrounding countries, it appears that the Sentinelese were able to sense the coming of the tsunami and escape to higher ground before it arrived. When an Indian Navy helicopter arrived three days after to check on their well-being and drop food parcels on the beach, a Sentinelese warrior came out of the jungle and warned the helicopter off with a bow and arrow, a clear sign that the Sentinelese did not want help from outsiders.

Since 1967 Indian authorities have attempted to make peaceful contact with the Sentinelese under the auspices of anthropological research. These "contact expeditions" consisted of a series of visits in which gifts such as coconuts were left on the shores, in an attempt to coax the Sentinelese out of their customary hostility to outsiders. Almost all of these attempts were greeted with showers of arrows and stone.
In 2006, Sentinelese archers killed two fishermen who were fishing illegally within range of the island, and drove off the helicopter that was sent to retrieve their bodies with a hail of arrows. The current policy of the Indian government is to leave the islanders alone. There are currently no planned attempts to contact the Sentinelese and access to North Sentinel island is strictly forbidden.
