GM Announces Chevrolet Silverado Electric Pickup Truck: Approximately 650 Km On A Single Charge

General Motors is preparing to market an electric version of its best-selling model, the Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck. In terms of technology, the electric truck will not have anything in common with the petrol and diesel Silverado. Production will begin in late 2022 at Factory Zero in Detroit.

GM continues its offensive on the electric front and, following the premiere of the GMC Hummer EV electric SUV, has announced its flagship plug-in model for the next decade, the Chevrolet Silverado EV pickup truck. The official statement is rather meager, it says that the Silverado EV will be based on the modular Ultium platform and that it will be able to travel more than 400 miles (644 km) on a single charge.

The Silverado EV will be produced at Factory Zero in Detroit, aka Detroit-Hamtramck Assembly Center. Last year, the plant completed production of the Cadillac CT6 and Chevrolet Impala sedans, after which it began its reconstruction for the production of electric vehicles, for which General Motors pledged $ 2.2 billion.

The planned capacity of Factory Zero is 270 thousand “electric trains” per year, at the end of this year the plant will start production of GMC Hummer EV pickups. The unmanned shuttle Cruise Origin will also be registered here, but GM does not name the exact date for the start of its release, since it is not yet clear to whom and how to sell this shuttle, because American legislation is not ready to regulate the operation of cars without a steering wheel and pedals, that is, as a commercial product of Cruise Origin so far not viable.

Ferrari plans: Italians will release the first “green” model in a few years

Now the sports car, which will have an electric “filling”, is at the development stage. There are no details about the technique yet.

Ferrari is definitely not a mainstream carmaker: the company has a rather modest but stable performance year after year. However, last year, when the entire European car market experienced a serious recession due to the consequences of the coronavirus pandemic, the company managed not only to stay afloat, but also to increase its performance. Dealers in 2020 sold 4169 cars in Europe, which is 13% more than a year earlier.

However, in order to maintain their position and expand the audience, the Scuderia still have to adapt to the modern requirements of the old-world authorities. And they want automakers to reduce the level of harmful substances in the atmosphere (if they do not fit into very strict limits, they have to pay impressive fines). For this, most of the mass companies have long been investing in the development of electric cars. Ferrari is just entering the game: the fact that the company is already working on the creation of its first “battery” car, it became known last year.

Then it was assumed that this is rather a distant prospect, since the company was going to develop a technology that would allow it to release an “outstanding” Ferrari electric car to the market, and the manufacturer called the current technologies “raw” and unsuitable.

Probably the fact that after 2030 the UK decided to ban the sale of cars with traditional internal combustion engines (hybrids were left until 2035) was also on the list of “brand progress engines”. Audi has unveiled the Q4 e-tron crossover and its coupe version with the Sportback prefix

The German company has unveiled the most compact (to date) crossover in its electric lineup. It is based on the Volkswagen platform MEB, on which the Volkswagen ID.4 is based.

The harbinger of the “usual” crossover Q4 e-tron – the concept of the same name – was shown in Audi in the spring of 2019 at the Geneva Motor Show. A pre-production show car with a coupe-like body and the traditional Sportback prefix to the name was presented in the summer of 2020. Now the German company has declassified both product novelties and told in detail about their “stuffing”.

Unlike the large SUV Audi e-tron, which is based on the MLB Evo platform, the new SUVs are based on the MEB electric trolley developed by Volkswagen. Recall that such “battery” SUVs as VW ID.4 and Skoda Enyaq iV are built on it (both Audi and Skoda are a part of the Volkswagen concern).

The length of the Q4 e-tron and Q4 Sportback e-tron is 4588 mm and the distance between the axles is 2764 mm. For comparison, the length of the Volkswagen ID.4 is 4584 mm, and the Skoda Enyaq iV is 4648 mm. In its price range, Audi crossovers will most likely compete with the Tesla Model Y (its length is 4750 mm, and its wheelbase is 2891 mm).

The commercial versions of Audi’s “electric crossovers” repeat the previously presented design concepts. At the front, there is a large plug in place of the traditional branded radiator grille, and a small air intake is built into the lower part of the bumper. The model received LED head optics, matrix headlights are optionally available. At the stern, both models have a brake light in the form of a strip with LED graphics characteristic of the brand’s electric cars. The diagonal of the rims ranges from 19 to 21 inches.

Volkswagen is preparing a small crossover: the first image of the ID.2

Another “battery” novelty of the German brand is expected to appear on the European market in 2025.

Last month it became known that by the end of this decade the share of electric vehicles in the sales structure of the German brand in the old world market will grow to 70%, said VW CEO Ralf Brandstätter. Recall that now the company has a “green” family of ID, a couple of representatives of which are already on sale in Europe.

Thus, sales of the Volkswagen ID.3 electro hatch started in Europe in September last year. As a result, in the first six months of the presence of the firstborn of the family on the market, dealers sold 61,341 pieces. And the ID.4 crossover appeared in December 2020: in the first three months, customers in the Old World bought 5627 cars.

In the future, the ID line will be actively replenished: the current development strategy assumes that the company will be able to release at least one “battery” novelty per year. So, this year is expected to debut all-wheel drive “charged” crossover ID.4 GTX, coupe-like SUV ID.5, as well as a large SUV ID.6, designed only for the Chinese market. Later, production cars based on the ID Buzz and ID Vizzion concepts will be presented. In addition, in 2025, the “green family” is likely to join the small electric vehicle ID.1. Now officially: Toyota Venza returns as Harrier

So far, the SUV with a revived name has been announced only in the form of a hybrid, although its clone in Japan has a “traditional” version. The novelty will enter the market this summer.

A model called Venza was produced at the Toyota plant located in the USA from 2008 to 2017. But the “five-door” version, which was a cross between a station wagon and a crossover, was not particularly successful. Nevertheless, last fall on the Web there was information that Venza will return to the gamut of the brand, and today it has officially announced a comeback. True, so far the model has been announced only for the American market: under this name they will sell a local version of the fourth-generation Harrier SUV.

The new Harrier was shown in Japan a month ago. The five-seater crossover is built on the GA-K platform, created as part of the TNGA architecture (Toyota New Global Architecture), the same “cart” underlies the current Toyota RAV4. The company did not disclose the dimensions of the American Venza, however, it is unlikely that the cross in size is very different from the “4-th” Toyota Harrier. The length of the latter is 4740 mm, width – 1855 mm, height – 1660 mm, wheelbase – 2690 mm (like the RAV4). If we compare it with the previous Venza, then it is larger in all respects, except for the height: 4800/1905/1610 mm, the distance between the axles is 2775 mm.

In terms of design, the “2-nd” Venza is practically no different from the Japanese brother. In all versions of the novelty there are auto-brake systems (with the function of detecting pedestrians and cyclists), automatic switching of headlights and monitoring of “blind” zones, cruise control. The base Toyota Venza has a multimedia system with an 8-inch touchscreen and a 4.2-inch color screen in the instrument panel, while the top-end cross has multimedia with a 12.3-inch display and a 7-inch “tidy” screen. And for a surcharge, you can order a projection display, a “digital” salon mirror (a picture from the camera is displayed on it) and an electrochromic panoramic roof with a dimming function.

Updated Range Rover and Range Rover Sport: Ingenium anniversary diesel engine

This year, Range Rover celebrates its 50th anniversary. By the round date, the flagship SUV and its younger brother with the Sport prefix received an Ingenium in-line 6-cylinder diesel engine with power from 249 to 350 hp, which will replace the V6 and V8 diesels.

The debut of the new diesel engine in 2020 is an event, because many manufacturers, under the onslaught of difficult environmental requirements, abandon this type of engine (for example, Porsche, Volvo, Honda, Subaru). The 3-liter Ingenium diesel engine, of course, complies with the current Euro 6d-Final standards, but for this I had to use the whole arsenal of modern “treatment facilities”, which in a sense can be attributed to a hybrid 48-volt superstructure: the starter-generator connected to the crankshaft helps diesel engine when starting and intense acceleration, and therefore allows you to burn a little less fuel and throw a little less harmful substances into the atmosphere.

The design features of the new motor also include an aluminum block, two successive tube compressors and an injection pressure of 2500 bar. The manufacturer has not yet disclosed other technical details, but the transition to in-line architecture is most likely connected with the modularity of the architecture of Ingenium engines (it allows to reduce production costs) and the convenience of installing a bulky exhaust gas purification system. For this reason, Daimler also recently returned to in-line 6-cylinder engines.

There are three versions of the new diesel engine: the D250 with a return of 246 hp. and 600 Nm, D300 – 300 hp and 650 Nm, D350 – 350 hp, 700 Nm. They will replace the diesel engines 3.0 liter V6 (249-306 hp, 600-700 Nm) and 4.4 liter V8 (339 hp, 740 Nm).
