Ibeju-Lekki is one of the four local government areas created in Lagos State by Gen Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida in 1990, out of the old Epe Local Government, with headquarters at Akodo. However in October 2003, the then Executive Governor of Lagos State, H. E Bola Ahmed Tinubu, carved LEKKI LCDA out of IBEJU LEKKI LOCAL GOVERNMENT. This in turn necessitated the relocation of the headquarters from Akodo to Igando Oloja, its present site.

Ibeju-Lekki sits along the Lagos-Epe expressway and offers a window to the Atlantic Ocean. It boasts of natural beaches extending from bar beach, in Victoria Island to Oniru beach to Eleko beach. There are a good number of tourist attractions in this area such as the Eko tourist centre, Lekki conservation centre, Hermitage gardens and resort, Lakowe Lakes Golf resort and host of others.


Ibeju-Lekki axis is part of what is popularly referred to as the ‘New Lagos’. The roads are okay and it is a relatively safe place at least by Nigerian standard. It is home to the Lekki Free Trade Zone and other massive infrastructural projects, the proposed Dangote Refinery.


Ibeju Lekki is perhaps the fastest growing Local Government in Lagos State, because of the recent citing of the Lekki Export Free Trade Zone, which include both air and sea ports along its corridor by the Lagos State Government.
