As a follow up to my previous thread here; https://www.nairaland.com/3386908/why-atheist-not-engage-pre-marital#up about atheists and their view of pre-marital sex; I want to engage you guys on this topic too.

Morality is dicey. Who determines what is right and wrong? As a Christian, it is the bible and for a Moslem, it is the Quaran. For someone abandoning these books, there needs to be a new standard for morality.

These religious books have spoken against sexual immorality and most believers have taken pornography and masturbation as wrong.

Now for an Atheist, how do you see these two things, are they right or wrong, If you think it is wrong, what logical conclusion do you bring up to see it as wrong.

Lol. As a Christian how can you even claim porn is bad since Jehovah watches everyone in the world having sex? Can you imagine how often it ma5turbate5 daily? undecided

Despite our religious fanaticism we watch more porn than even Americans shocked

Did you Know? Nigerians watch more Internet Porn than Americans!

https://www.bellanaija.com/2016/08/did-you-know-nigerians-watch-more-internet-porn-than-americans-labo-daniel-speaks-to-subomi-plumptre-on-a-new-episode-of-conversations-with-labo/

And what percentage of these Nigerians watching porn are Christians, Muslims or atheists. Your guess is as good as mine.

God burnt hundreds of women and children in Sodom and Gomorrah but didn't bat an eyelid when Lot slept with his two daughters in an obvious incestial party. What is the morality in that?

As far as I am concerned, masturbating is cool. It is way better than adultery or rape, something which religious people indulge in often(just check front page and see how many Christians rape and are caught committing adultery), as it is cheaper. Why be bothered about what other people do in their privacy anyway when it doesn't bother anyone?

As regards porn, watching it is cool even for married couples to fulfill their sexual fantasies but I do have a thing against the way it is produced considering that some of the girls are forced or deceived into it.

Let me try to help you.

''Is premarital sex right or wrong?''

I'd say there exists no such thing as right or wrong. What seems right to you might not be right for somebody else and vice versa. Moreover, premarital sex is a subject on which people share a wide variety of opinions, even among Christians. I saw on the FP sometimes back about a Christian Author writing that premarital sex is not a big deal. So we really can't label it right as wrong. All one can do is try and know what (s)he feels is right for its own self.

To wait for sex till marriage is entirely one's personal choice. There's nothing wrong with it. Also, it's fair enough to wish for a virgin spouse if you yourself are a virgin as at the end of the day, one seeks to spend their life with someone who share their views and ideology on issues as crucial as premarital sex.

My personal opinion:

I guess you've garnered your 'values' regarding sex from the kind of (christian) environment you're being brought up in. You hail from a very religious background where sex is considered as a taboo and premarital sex a crime. I might be wrong there as I've seen people who despite being raised in those typical orthodox families refuse to accept slowpoke conventions of the society on subjects such as premarital sex and are willing to open up to a more mature mindset.

Sometimes you do wish to have sex which is quite natural but you choose to wait instead as you've a notion that sex before marriage is something immoral and impure.

Some people want to 'preserve' their virginity for their husband/wife? What is it? Some kind of treasure? They want their wife/husband to be virgin as well. Wow! Quite a status symbol virginity is, isn't it?

Let's suppose your first marriage doesn't work out and you have to opt in for remarriage. What then? You won't be having any virginity 'preserved' for your to be wife/husband now. Would it be okay now if the lady/man you're gonna remarry isn't a virgin or you would still consider marrying a virgin girl only? Now you see how lame and invalid that ideology of ''preserving one's virginity for their marriage'' is?

Equating virginity to morality and self worth doesn't make sense to me.

The same argument holds for Pornography and masturbation.

Do u feel like sleeping with your kids(if any) or your sister if you see her unclothed? Your sheer hatred for Christianity isn't helping here. Think a bit more fairly if u are thinking at all.(addressed to the first part of your post)

You claim Christians watch porn, what makes them Christians if they fail to follow the scriptures? Tell me.

I believe op asked what your view was, consider answering this as if Christianity didn't exist, shouldn't be too hard since atheist is all about disproving God's existence.

Alright, that answers the notion of pre-marital sex; the immorality alluded to it is made up by the society and background.

Now, how about porn; is it okay too or you feel it's wrong.. what makes you think it's wrong?

For the Christians, good and bad at a particular time is fixed that is why people can be judged.

I feel this can be debated logically that is why I am asking for a reason separate from religious ones..

Anyways, what is your personal opinion on the topic?

I see it the same way I see 'consumption of alcoholic beverages'. I won't outrightly say they are 'right' or 'wrong'.

They have good and bad sides which again is relative.

Watching porn, like playing chess or going to PSquare's concerts, is morally neutral. It is neither bad nor good.

Now, if you treat porn like sex education and you start to expect sex from the plumber or the person who is your nurse, that might be bad. But watching porn, of and by itself, is neutral.

Morality is a human construct for the human society and thus has human definition - to me a moral action is an action that decreases individual or societal suffering and also improves societal well being, equality, freedom, justice and continuity.

An immoral action to me is one that increases individual or societal suffering and is detrimental to societal well being, equality, freedom, justice or continuity..

So if you tell me how masturbation fits into the definition above then i'll tell you how wrong it is..

Eating is not wrong cus you feel hungry, scratching an itch is not, why then would someone massaging their own D/V when they feel aroused wrong or concerns you?

Yeah, sure. Thanks.

smiley I still consider porn immoral.. what it does to the mind.. what is involved in making it up.. forced sex, sex prostitution, the deceit, underage etc.

Watching porn creates a demand and were there is a demand there will always be a supply so if there is demand for young Asian women, more of such women will be trafficked into it.

So my action in my little home may have a ripple effect somewhere in the world and it's not all 'what one does in his bedroom does not affect you'.

Masturbation may just be the lesser of the two evils when it goes hand in hand with porn.

I'll have you know most religious peeps I've come across have pre-marital sex more than anything I've seen.

Sex is for all to consume and enjoy. What determines what is right and wrong should be the constitution and our personal belief.

For instance, if you know you don't want your phone to be stolen, don't steal someone else' phone.

So there is absolutely nothing wrong in one watching pornography or even engaging in pre-marital sex.

I personally wouldn't encourage anyone to watch p0rn or jerk off since these things tend to be addicting and give people a false perception/expectation of sex.
I do consider it to be morally neutral provided there's no underage sex/child pornography or any other sex crime involved.

You made some valid points here. Supply and demand just like drug abuse.
So basically if there's no trafficking, prostitution etc involved would you consider it be at least morally neutral or do you have other reasons besides the aforementioned.

Life itself is meaningless. I consider eating chicken and killing animals for food a lot worse than watching nudes and touching a private organ that belongs to you.

Why should anyone bother about what the other guy does with his eyes and hands? I find this question weird.

Of course you haven't said anything new , nothing is categorically bad or good,it's through its resulting actions we can boldly brand as good or bad.

Now do you think it's resulting actions make it good or bad?

The answer is simple, you need the society to survive...if all human society casts you out to the wild where you can do whatever you want, how long do you think you would survive?...

We all need the society to survive and the society need all of us to be moral for it to survive.

Rain and wind patterns grow plants then animals feed on them then I feed on animals, whereis the society in this?
