Police uncover plot to attack Lagos

Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Marvel Akpoyibo, yesterday said the Command had uncovered secret plot bysome youths to attack some parts of the metropolis.

Though he did not reveal the form the attack might assume, he said security report at his disposal revealed that some youths had been arriving the metropolis in groups of 50 and above in recent time and advised members of the public to avail the police in the state with useful information regarding any suspicious movement.

Akpoyibo said indiscriminate display and sale ofoffensive weapons and other dangerous items such as knives cutlasses, cudgels, scissors and hammers had been outlawed and that anybody or groups of persons arrested over this would be made to face the wrath of the law.

He said the mode of entry of the groups into the state have raised security concerns within the law enforcement circle, thus necessitating close monitoring and surveillance of their activities and lifestyle by the Command.

Akpoyibo said, “while the Command is conscious of, and will continue to respect the constitutional rights of all citizens to freedom of movement and association, we wish to advise that such rights must be exercised and enjoyed within the confines of the law. The Command, therefore, wishes to enjoin all Lagosians to remain vigilant and report any suspicious movement within their localities to the nearest policestation,” he said.

Also yesterday, the Command said it will continue to carry out periodic raid around foreign embassies and High Commissions in Lagos, to discourage fake visa agents and touts from makingthe place a safe haven for their criminal activities.

This is as 113 policemen were arrested for allegedly misusing their firearms, while a good number of policemen are currently serving various jail terms, with others standing trials at various courts in the metropolis.
