I get this question all the time so I am prepared to answer its ignorance and disrespect for the Gods. Africans caused their own demise by not following the Gods. Ifa became useless to the people as they started to fight with each other, even to the disagreement of Ifa. Look at the Yoruba civil war, it weakened the empire of Oyo. Foolish kings thought that they were too good to pay taxes to the Alaafin. Without the empire they were dead in the water to all the sharks coming into Africa via Jihad and Crusades. Slavery was taking place on other parts of the continent, land was being stolen, and still these kings thought more of their vaults than the safety of their lands and people via an empire. Then after fighting for 10 years in a foolish civil war the Yorubas got invaded by Fulani supplied by the British with guns and cannons. Dahomey rebelled and raided the corridor that sits between Nigeria and Benin many Yoruba towns were captured and sold into slavery. Yes Dahomey royalty admit to capturing Yorubas and other tribes and selling them to Europeans. But I blame the Yoruba kings who rebelled for this nonsense. Oranyiyam built an empire and his son Sango expanded it to the greatest empire in Africa's history. It lasted for many centuries before it started to crumble. It crumbled because sub-chiefs, and Obas thought they were greater than the Alaafin. All the Orishas, Irunmole that traditional Yorubas worship, most come from the royal line of Oyo. Oduduwa, Sango, Oba, Osun and Oya, these are the bloodline of Yoruba royal family. How can we be so disconnected from the ancestors? The Gods are the Ancestors and the Ancestors are the Gods. We are one with the Gods and the Gods are one with us. To deny the Gods is to deny our greatness. African people are Gods and the royal ancestors we worship , their lives proved every bit of this ultimate truth, that we are a great cosmic race. There's no other people like us on Earth and there never will be. That is because the Gods live in our bloodlines.

To be fair Africans had their own gods. They probably did not even call on Him. Only one Country that had Christianity in Africa (Ethiopia) escaped. Wait. God was in Ethiopia grin

Ethiopia is just a defeated as any other part of Africa. I don't know where people get this idea the present day Ethiopia is the Ancient Ethiopia, land of Kush, home of Queen Sheba, that would be South Sudan. Get check it. When the British took over most of East Africa and the Arabs, the Brits introduced Freemasonry as did the Turks, homosexuality entered into the high ranks of mostly every African government. Homosexuality is in the high ranks of every Arab government. You had to be a homosexual, swear an oath to Rome, just to get anything done. How come the Great Hallie Sallie went to England to beg support when the Germans attacked his country? Or was it France but he sent to bow down. Ethiopia may not have been officially colonized but she was conquered like all the rest. You can't defeat a problem if you're in denial.

Ethiopia - the current one - has a very strong Christian culture which is dramatically different than modern Christianity. Except for the Oromo, Ethiopian culture has been Christian for thousands of years, and Yahweism before Christ.

Talking about South Sudan, Even the current South Sudanese came from the north. The place is dry, diseases ridden and unnecessarily hot. If I had a powerful Kingdom, I would base it on the Lush Ethiopian Highlands just a few hundred miles away.

I'm not denying the beauty of Ethiopia nor its rich Christian traditions but solidarity is not gained by imposing upon others your culture. I love Yoruba culture and West Africa is where most of the slaves in the West are from originally. We have problems and we are, some of us, working them. Ase.

My brother look, the main reason for the rebellion you speak of by Yoruba potentates with regard to paying tribute to the Alaafin, and other such actions that led to our vulnerability, was essentially LACK OF INFORMATION about the goings on in the outside world, particularly the western world. These guys simply had no idea what was coming at them, in the form of the western slave trade and colonialism. Don't forget that Africa, as a result of the Sahara desert to the north (which used to be fertile and inhabited thousands of years ago) and the Atlantic to the south, was essentially cut off from global developments, particularly after the fall of Egypt, which saw mass migrations of Africans southwards, and led to the relinquishing of our possession of the northern coasts to foreign invaders. So it was not a surprise that after a few centuries, Africa would fall behind in both technological and informational developments in the rest of the world, and this made us really vulnerable, especially when the industrial revolution occurred, and we were not part of it. So a lot of this really has to do with Africa being cut off from the world in a fundamental way during a time major changes were taking place in the world.

You deny not this rebellion against Baba Sango but wanna give excuses. To rebel against the head of the empire without a just cause was suicidal and egotistical for it caused the empire to become vulnerable to attack. No one is equal to Baba Sango. Baba Sango is God on Earth, second only to the Irunmole, only Obatala and Yemaya, which are the Elders are higher. Yet the elders choose to remain unseen and put the youth out front, which the younger Irunmole is Sango. Its the Christian beliefs that made Obatala into Christ but Obalata isn't Christ, Obatala is omnipresent, Obatala is God and Sango is his son therefore Sango is Christ, and Heru. The throne of the Alaafin is the future of Oyo and the Oba of Oyo who owns the palace, his people called Yoruba rising again. There is no colonial, Republic or Roman city state will raise up Africa, only the ancient order will raise Africa. Respect the Alaafin. Ase.
