Ok so I force myself read this thing and noticed that it was a nurse that wrote this article.. it has to be, they be looking for way to equate the playing ground. Let me answer your question.. Nurses are nurses and MDs are MDs, they are all doctors but not MDs. Thank you 4 Likes |

babyfaceafrica: Pharmacists can't prescribe for every disease. Not because they don't know what to prescribe but because, treating an illness is more than just prescribing drugs. There are a lot of things to consider in prescribing drugs. There could be co-morbidities which the pharmacists may not be aware of and these can only be revealed by investigations ordered by a doctor. There are comobidities that are obvious but there are many which can only be revealed by detailed investigations that only a doctor is trained to do. Some drugs need therapeutic drug monitoring which can only be carried out in the hospital under the supervision of a doctor with inputs from the pharmacist. So the pharmacist has his limit in prescribing, not because he doesn't know what to prescribe, but because there are a lot more things to consider beside the obvious presenting symptoms of the patient. Some diseases are not easy to diagnose because there could be up to five different diseases with similar symptoms. The pharmacist is trained to know symptoms of various diseases but he has his limits. This is where you need a doctor- the expert in diagnosis. Once the doctor has confirmed the diagnosis, the pharmacist can help to choose the appropriate medication and help the patient to understand how his medication works, the possible side effects and how he should take the drugs for optimum result. In all, healthcare is more of a symbiotic relationship between all the players involved. 8 Likes |

Lagusta: My brother, please disabuse your mind that a Graduate nurse is a superior nurse or has a training at par with an American trained nurse. You need to know the unholiness that happens I our departments of nursing. My mum retired as the principal of a school of nursing and she was appalled at the fad of everyone rushing for BNSc. 3 Likes |

/ The difference is clear especially in the scope of practice. The author is mainly pandering to nurses. Did you read where he compared the experience of floor Nurse to "interns"? Unbelievable! If need be, the author should compare interns and nursing students because both groups are still under training. \ 3 Likes |

Well once in a while... This kind of article is important to enlighten the public, why because... Most nigerians even the educated ones are still very foolish when it comes to the health sector. When we fall sick the only thing we think of after hospital is the doctor, forgotten that alot of feilds has come together to make the HOSPITAL. Also because of this praises render to the doctors, most nurses simply get pissed and behave anyhow in return to the patients and relatives with the mindset that.... Afterall dia effort is not appreciated so why giving dia best. In conclusion if u wanna hear the truth... 10% of the mortality rate in the hospital are caused by the society not appreciating nurses effort in our hospital, so they do alot of degligence of duty which is very costly to human life. Afterall no surveillance camera is watching. Please i am talking from experience, let's learn to appreciate from the gateman at the hospital gate to the cleaners on the hospital wards. 3 Likes |

eleojo23:There is nothing that "only a doctor is trained to do" that is fantasy. The MBBS level training is basic training, very basic indeed, after that if a doctor chooses to specialize his training is still quite narrow. The scope of medicine so wide and pace of development so fast that no doctor can cover everything A nurse who works in Obstetrics for 10 years cannot in anyway be compared to a paediatrician of 10 years who has not taken a delivery in 10 years . A psychiatrist who has not held a syringe or suture in 10 years cannot supplant a specialist theatre nurse. A nurse with trauma experience in a busy casualty has experience of making decisions quikly in life and death situations which few radiologists can offer. Doctors too have their limits and those people who try to propagate this myth of a doctor with all encompassing training and knowledge are either deluded or dishonest. There is very little a doctor knows theoretically that anyone else cannot find out from the internet. The medical school training often offers a taster of some specialties and does not cover every field of medicine. Even at specialist consultant level the absence of equipment in Nigeria often makes these consultant titles empty and meaningless when compared to specialist practitioners from more advanced centres 4 Likes 1 Share |

odinegi: Valid points, it's the doctors bossy and non appreciative attitude towards or other health workers' efforts that pisses them off especially Nig doctors. Nig doctors behave like they alone do all the work and they look down on others as inferiors. Even right the university most med students see themselves as the "all there's". They have no idea what team play and team leadership is. Thats the crux of the Nig dilemma. 1 Like |

InyinyaAgbaOku: What the article was clearly trying to say was that in recent times there is an increasing convergence in the roles of nurses and doctors, especially in view of enhancements in the academic content of their training, where some can even become Phd holders. The article also gave experience as another factor for this convergence of roles, citing examples of task shifting e.g. giving prescription, surgical intervention etc. Much as you may want to disagree; experience certainly always counts in any profession or life activity and can't be dismissed as you flippantly did. It won't even surprise me, if by chance you are doctor, that you might have learnt a thing or two from some of the nurses in the ward during your housemanship - the fact is, no body has a monopoly of knowledge, even the teacher sometimes learns from his student. Remember, the story of Dr. Christian Bernard, the first to successfully transplant the human heart (a white South African during Apartheid regime); well it was later revealed that towards the end of his career he was secretly allowing his black attendant (who had no formal medical training whatsoever) to assist him and eventually take over some the transplant operations. Dr. Bernard was having difficulty moving his fingers due to arthritis and felt confident enough to entrust such procedures to his attendant because the latter had acquired the required skill, over the years through the practical experience of watching and gradually assisting - and there are similar parallels here too in Nigeria. 1 Like |

This article is only useful in advanced countries. Nigeria is way behind in health care. Nurse practitioners are more patient with patient's when it comes to assessment. In some facilities in America, the first on call is usually a Nurse Practitioner. Naija is still crawling in terms of health care services. 2 Likes |
