We should not forget that journalists in Nigeria are not well paid. The salaries of most Nigerian journalists is nothing to wrote home about cry cry That is why many of them will readily accept brown envelopes and spew out stories full of lies. The Nigerian Media is really bedevilled with a lot of problems. Cheers.

OMG! The bolded got me laughing. But i know that nobody is above mistake.

They remain good for wrapping "akara" and "moi moi". Also useful for tidying up after visiting the yellow house.

Behind bobo:

Reading PUNCH is better than others cos they are not as serious and tasking as Thisday or Guardian, their news and quality of presentation is also better than most other newspapers.I relax with PUNCH any time i get back from work. That i cant say of others.ENJOYYYYYYYYYYY

I agree that The Punch is ahead of the others. Their reporters follow stories and their editors do their job which is editing. The Guardian still attracts the best opinion writers, though, and writes really good editorials.

I buy four newspapers everyday, not because I get first hand info in them or I enjoy reading dem, but because someone has to buy them for salaries to be paid and for some families and some individuals to survive. A way of giving back to the society, maybe?
Re: Nigerian Newspapers Are Waste Of Money by Spyker: 6:51pm On Nov 13, 2009
I read the Nigeria newspapers online because i got fed up with buying and reading trash. I read it just to update and enhance my vocabulary. To say the truth, Nigerian newspapers and the journalist reflect the level of corruption in the media. If i have the money, i will just open a paper factory and recycle them to exercise books which will be better made use of than reading the bunch of trash
Re: Nigerian Newspapers Are Waste Of Money by 700john: 6:54pm On Nov 13, 2009
Good , but you need to buff up your Cartesian geometry skills. The graph of information vs. time would never be a line pointing straight up, That would indicate an instantaneous learning of an infinite amount of information.

What you mean is not that the line would not slope, but that it would no longer bend toward a plateau. The information gained per unit of time would be constant for all intervals on the graph. This would be the slope.

Total waste of money, imagine reading about people who loot the country's money, caused economic hardship to people. The Media definately is not trying at all, why should stories like the life of Bode George in prison still be an issue on the pages of dailies. his issue should by now be a forgotten one and let him pay for his sins. RUBBISH!!!!
Re: Nigerian Newspapers Are Waste Of Money by Princek12(m): 8:20pm On Nov 13, 2009
They are complete waste of money, because the stories published by a majority of Nigerian newspapers are replete with grammatical errors and are stylistically substandard.

Re: Nigerian Newspapers Are Waste Of Money by Remii(m): 10:23pm On Nov 13, 2009
Newspapers are still relevant but mostly for adverts of some sort, it is still required that all public procurements must be advertised in daily newspapers, change of name, obituaries, etc. For breaking news? not to people in Lagos, Abuja, PHC or  other cities where there are numerous radio and TV stations but rural areas still look for news in the paper. They have other features and analytical sections too that interest some readers. As an investment option? Warren Buffet already said it is an aspect that seems to have no future so he would not put his money there.

Who can actually tell the whole truth publicly in Nigeria?
Re: Nigerian Newspapers Are Waste Of Money by adisalago(m): 11:23pm On Nov 13, 2009
I think good and real journalism is gradually fading in Nigeria and this is largely due to the fact that there's not quality check or control in our media set up. Imagine 99% of our dailies have poor structure/layout and most annoyingly, they are poorly printed. Has anyone noticed the "colour riot" in some of these dailies? Sometimes one will require help form the specsavers to go through just a page! Even the London Metro which is free for everyone is printed with full colour and pictures, compared to some newspapers back home that will require u taking painkillers for headache after reading them. I think they need to be more concerned about quality and not quantity.

I can now see the typographical error in my post grin grin The word should have been 'write' , not '' wrote ''. I was typing in a hurry, as I was about to head to the office in the afternoon. Accept my apology. Cheers.

Every society get what it derserves. If you want more from these media you need to contribute to their report. All the international news media you favoured get information and reports from ordinary people who are not in any way connected with journalism as a profession. How many Nigerians locally and in the diaspora contribute to their pool. It is true many of these newspapers do write junks and lies and assumptions as truths, and you may feel that you dont get what you are expecting, the reality is nobody is speaking or releasing infomation in Nigeria. Those who manages to do so either seeks for gratification, speaks half-truths or non thruths. Those in government have even signed to oaths of secrecy. So my people for the little you get, you should be grateful to get at all. Most thruths only comes out when there is crises in the polity or amongst the ruling elites. This is the only country where government is always planning, formulating, intending, proposing, thinking, strategising, preparing, seeking, trying, managing, talking, losing, hoping, parleying, discussing, wanting, wishing, articulating, gathering; but never act, do or achieve. So what we get is garbage in garbage out and we must eat the garbage. The truth is you need to read the papers to know about all these "ings".

OM Gosh!!! The above is soooo very true. Especially of Tinubu's government and the way The Punch was always reporting these "ings" as news. The Fourth Mainland Bridge and the Coastal Road come to mind. ThisDay even got in on the act by giving Tinubu's government an award for those projects. And today, they haven't even started, still!!!
Re: Nigerian Newspapers Are Waste Of Money by miqos02(m): 9:42am On Nov 14, 2009
even the radio and tv stations are not left out in the rot. listening to their news is just a waste of time because they they keep on missing their lines,u begin to wonder what is the editor doing.
Re: Nigerian Newspapers Are Waste Of Money by galatico(m): 12:04pm On Nov 14, 2009
Yeah!!! That's true, I noticed it myself, thats the reason I don't buy papers anymore .
