Confusion, intrigues as divided senate disowns Ndume over SGF, Magu
Strong indications emerged on Tuesday that the Nigerian senate has suffered a serious crack over its decisions to reject the nomination of Mr Ibrahim Magu as the executive chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on the one hand and its recommendation that the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Mr David Babachir Lawal should resign his office and be prosecuted for twin offences of abuse of office and corruption on the other hand.

This is because less than 24 hours after the Senate Leader, Ali Ndume, told State House correspondents that the Red Chamber did not reject the nomination of Ibrahim Magu as the substantive chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), as well as indict the Secretary to Government of the Federation (SGF), Mr. David Babachir Lawal, the Senate leadership, on Tuesday dissociated itself from the claim.

Specifically, the Upper Legislative Chamber, through its spokesman, Senator Abdullahi Sabi, nullified the Ndume’s claims.‎

He spoke during an emergency press conference in Abuja on Tuesday.

Bar and Bench Watch reports that between last week Thursday and this week Tuesday, the senate had communicated three conflicting positions on the two issues to Nigerians and the entire world.

For instance, on Thursday, the senate had rejected Magu and disgraced him out of the National Assembly based on a purported security report emanating from the Office of the Department of State Service (DSS) which dismissed him as morally bankrupt, corrupt and therefore not a fit and proper person to occupy the office of EFCC chairmanship.

The same senate, on the same day, recommended the SGF, Mr David Babachir Lawal, for sack and prosecution having purportedly made fortune from the misfortune of North East humanitarian crisis, abused his office by awarding contracts to his own company and having purportedly portrayed himself as a good example of a bad public officer.

The position of the senate dominated the public space all through the weekend with the media feasting on the issues.

But on Monday, the senate through its majority leader, Ali Ndume, amended its position, saying the senate never rejected Magu but only stepped down his screening for clarifications on the grey areas in the security report used by the senate to take its decision.

Ndume also on Monday said that the senate was yet to take final decision on its so called recommendation that the SGF should resign his appointment and face prosecution, the report relied upon being an interim one.

The right person to report senate procedings is their chairman, media, he is saddled with the responsibility to speak for the entire senate and not Ndume who will not want to say what the executives will not want to hear.
