Professor Adetowun Ogunsheye is the first female professor in Nigeria.

Born on the 5th of December 1926 to parents who were teachers at a missionary school in Benin City, Adetowun was allowed to go beyond secondary.

She attended Yaba Higher College in 1946 where she was the only female student and the first woman to graduate from the institution when she obtained the Higher College Teaching Diploma in 1948.

A year later, she was granted a scholarship to read Geography at the Newnham College of the University of Cambridge, thereby becoming the first Nigerian female to study at Cambridge.

She returned to Nigeria in 1954 as a geography teacher and taught at the Anglican Girls’ Grammar School, in Ilesha and the St. Anne’s School in Ibadan.

Few years later, she started working at the University of Ibadan as Chief of department of Library Studies and then became the Professor of Library Studies and the first female Professor in Nigeria in 1973.

Professor Adetowun Ogunsheye was also the first female Dean of Education in a Nigerian university, University of Ibadan, between 1977 and 1979.

On the 5th of December, 2016, Professor Adetowun Ogunsheye clocked 90 years.

God really bless S/W my region,when it comes to good things in Nigeria S/W always on the lead.
