Fashola’s future: Anxiety mounts over fresh allegations

Contrary to the denial by the Lagos State Government and the Lagos State House of Assembly of a plan to impeach the state Governor, Mr. Babatunde Fashola (SAN), THE PUNCH can authoritatively reveal that anxiety has heightened within government circle over the governor’s frosty relationship with members of the Assembly.

The lawmakers, our correspondents reliably gathered, were also not happy that they were not invited to the constitution amendment meeting said to be at the instance of a former Speaker of the state Assembly, Senator Oloruninbe Mamora on Wednesday.

The meeting had in attendance Fashola’s immediate predecessor, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, the state Commissioner for the Environment, Mr. Muiz Banire, and the governor.

For the review of the constitution, Lagos is expected to host the South-West Zone, while its position would be incomplete without the Assembly’s submission.

A good number of the assembly members were seen discussing the issue in hushed tones. One of them told our correspondent in confidence that, “The state’s submission during the review of the Constitution will be incomplete if you cannot call all the people to state what they want in their constitution, the best thing is to call their representatives.”

Investigations revealed that the lawmakers were first irked during the review of the 2009 budget where certain financial indiscretion was discovered in the government’s spending.

When the governor sent a letter to the Assembly on October 30 that he would like to present the 2010 Appropriation Bill on November 2, the lawmakers had declined, citing short notice and the fact that the 2009 Budget Review Committee set up by the House was yet to complete its job.
