Way to go sir! They look good. Please change that bedding to wood shaving or rice husk. The cartons you’re using isn’t healthy. It won’t absorb the chicken poo as it should. Other than that, Kudos!
FlintGuevara:

The birds are all doing fine. The only mortality I recorded was as a result of stampede in the enclosure I used for brooding. I administered Gumboro yesterday. I don't give them drugs, I use ginger, garlic and bitter leaf extract for their drug needs at the moment. The ginger and garlic are ever present in their water, while I've only administered bitterleaf extract twice.
I also mix dry crushed pawpaw leaf and bitterleaf in their feed.

How old are they? What’s their current average weight?

They are 14 days old today. I haven't weighed them yet, hoping to do so this weekend.

I finally concluded my project, with results as follows.....

*56 Chikun Cobb500 DOC stocked.

*Out of the 56 birds reared, 54 were sold on dressed weight basis.

*After dressing, 54 birds had a combined weight of 109.55kg.

*They were reared for 6 weeks, and fed 10 bags of Chikun feed ;
-superstarter(1-2 weeks)
-starter(2-4 weeks)
-finisher(4-6 weeks)

*Final live weight range was 1.59kg - 3.3kg.

*2 of the biggest birds were kept for personal consumption.

Well done & good job....

10 bags at an average cost of N3600/bag will give N 36,000 on feed...
50 birds at an average cost of N200 will give N10,000.00
Drugs stand at 5% of feeds which is N1800...
One dose of Gumb + Lasota gives like N1500..
Transport plus Kerosine gives like N2000
Total Estimated Cost =N=51,300.00

Revenue = 1050*52 =N=54,600 (Mortality of 5%)
Profit = N3,300.00 ....6.4% per batch

Feeds always take over 70% of the total cost of production ...
How can someone reduce feed cost to make broiler production profitable without compromising quality .....

Meat production; especially easing broilers is GIGO. Garbage in, Garbage out. You can’t reduce the quality of feed and expect good growth out of your birds.

Good feed = Good Growth
Good Growth = Speedy target weight.

That’s the secret in raising broilers. Nothing more.

Contrary to your thoughts sir
My total expenditure for that batch was approximately 66k...which was a bit high in my own opinion, though I didn't have to buy drugs for my current batch of birds because I have a lot still remaining from the other batch

I sold the birds on dressed weight basis(per kilo) at 850/kilo and I had total weight of 109kg. It was profitable so I won't advice you to compromise on feed otherwise you'll not get the best out of your birds which will definitely affect profitability.

How did you arrive at that revenue?

- I discussed with some major coy doing broiler contract farming.......
- They buy around =N=500 to =N=525/kilo....
- They ve the muscle to take all ur birds ... no matter the volume
- Assuming an average of =N=2 kilo per bird....
- Coy will buy at maturity at =N=1050 /bird... though there are slight penalties for not attaining the required kg...
- Assuming a mortality of 3/4 out of the 56 birds...you have 52 birds for sale....
- We arrive at 52 birds by N1050....

- I understand that there is possibility of selling at a higher kg ....
- Which depend on location and processor...
-Made price inquiries from some processors that handle large volume ....
- Price hovers around N500 - N525 per kilo...am just looking at a worst case scenario of N525/kilo
- How do someone make profit....

The person buying @such price is milking you or wants to milk u.. And it's not going to be profitable for selling to them look for better buyers.Target least price is 800#/kg

OK, sorry about that, wish you all the best... These ones I'm rearing now are not as good as the Olam birds. Next time I'll try and make sure it's Olam or nothing, their birds are just wonderful.

Hmm, sir I beg to disagree with your figures. At the moment the least that anyone sells is #800/kilo, my location is Kano state. I would advise you source for other buyers. The price even goes up to #900/kilo during festive season (I know of December).

Even around 2008-2010 it wasn't sold that low, it was around 600-650/kilo.

Pls try and understand your associates better otherwise I'll be forced to think that they're about to exploit you.

They are known standard feed companies in the country ...
I have their contract agreements with me .....
Agreement is for a year minimum with clauses...
They can absorb more than 10,000 birds per cycle from a single farmer .....
And more if you have the capacity at maturity ....
Some farmers are actually producing large volume for them...
Just tryin to figure how they make profit...

I have a question for the elders in the house. Please, how profitable is it to raise cockerels for Christmas considering the fact that they will be fed for 6 months minimum before they reach maturity??

That price they're buying is not good at all, the only way one can still profit selling at that price is if:
*you hatch your chicks yourself.
*you formulate your feed and farm the majority of your raw materials like maize, soya beans etc.
*you use organic or herbal medication regime.
I believe these factors alone will greatly reduce the cost of production by almost half, which will make selling at that price profitable other than that, I don't see any other way around it.

And have you been making profit with that contract within the time you have it running?
N525 is too poor, except maybe you rear huge numbers like 3000 - 5000 birds at once

In contribution to Oga Emma's explanation, poultry have various diseases that can affect birds or become serious at different stages of their life especially as they age, so it's safer to rear birds that reach maturity faster, which means avoiding some illnesses which can cause mortality and losses.
For instance, someone who keeps broilers or any other breed for 1month is more likely to harvest more birds than keeping them for 3months, so we can say that risk of losses increases with time, sort of.
