Ambode did the same during the on going epe township road dualization in Epe lagos state.

The tree was cut down and when the Oba Animashaun mobilize the worshippees after he has collected the sacrifrificial entitlement for the tree to be cut down

He was picked up and locked up.

Development is more than a particular community or belief.

If its a mosque or a church it would simply have been demolished and another one built somewhere.

Even if he refuses to do that road, he can sign the money pocket it and nothing will happen

Nigeria is still in dark age.

OrestesDante:
This why we are not developing in Africa!!!

Even trees are sacred.

Japan is a very developed nation. Am sure you have driven Japanese cars, used Japanese computers, and so on.

Infact, Japanese products are everywhere around the world. And they have even made contributions to science (Hashimoto's thyroiditis, Okazaki fragments in DNA research, etc).

But they too have SACRED TREES.

Above is an example of what is called Yorishiro...which (according to WikiP)

is an object capable of attracting spirits called kami, thus giving them a physical space to occupy during religious ceremonies. Yorishiro are used during ceremonies to call the kami for worship.[2] The word itself literally means approach substitute. Once a yorishiro actually houses a kami, it is called a shintai. Ropes called shimenawa decorated with paper streamers called shide often surround yorishiro to make their sacredness manifest Persons can play the same role as a yorishiro, and in that case are called yorimashi (憑坐? lit. possessed person) or kamigakari (神懸り・神憑? lit. kami possession)

By your definition, am sure you would say the Japanese are also backward.

OK....stop using all those Japanese products since they are backward. grin

Japanese people are really backward....they have sacred trees, shrines up and down the place, they even keep the ashes of their dead in shrines in their house and worship them. They even bring offerings to the graves of their families too...and pray to them shocked grin

Backwardness in Africa is not because of what we believe, or because of the West, or because we are of low IQ. It is because we focus on trivial things like sharing money instead of developing ourselves.

One of the weirdest things I've ever heard. How could a mere tree be sacred? What sort of mentality do some people have? Is Africa really cursed? A tree is in the way of a developmental project and some people are against it because of a tree. Why can't they go in the forest to find another tree? What's special about this one? Something just ain't right. I'll cut down the damn tree in a heartbeat. Complete nonsense.
dont forget that ikere was once a forest......italy,cambodia,china,india,malaysia etc have all successfully conserved their sacred places.....this is d type of trees brazillians and cubans dont jole with

I am not a religious person but I just want things to be balanced.

When El Rufai proposed a religious bill in Kaduna, we saw how Christians turned it on its head. If it were a church, Christians would have started shouting persecution. All I want is a society where things are done right. If Fayose would treat a church just the same way, it would be all right.

witchcraft coven. That's their mountain top mansion with a penthouse. A similar tree was cut years ago in Ago iwoye, led to the death of many witches in the area. They bury their life and powers there.

the tree is sacred because the oluikere is ordain as a ruler under that tree. The moment that tree is not there, there's no oluikere. He should avoid d tree n make it roundabout.

I am just refuting the idea that we are backward because we have sacred trees.

That's all.

Underdevelopment in Africa is not necessarily a function of belief.

Fayose must respect the traditionalists and leave their tree for them. That is their place of worship and you must leave it for them.
For those people screaming Africa this Africa that, had been it is a Mosque/Church that is blocking the dualization of same road am sure you won't say so.

Respect for all religion.
for mosque and church, people will only shout but won't stop government from cutting it down. see arisekola mosque in Ibadan. They also received a cut this last month

Nice one,

One thing I have come to realize in our people is that we always believe certain things are not practicable ,the lack of foresight is really relegating our potentials as a people to the backgrounds, most of our youths fail to research into the Un-imaginable.

Traditionalists and indigenes of Ikere Ekiti in Ekiti state yesterday prevented the state governor from cutting down a sacred tree blocking the dualization of a road in the community.
Governor Fayose was said to have ordered his men to uproot the tree for the commencement of a road dualization project in the area but they were sent packing after traditionalists lit bonfires at Odo Oja area of Ikere Ekiti.
In the heat of the crisis generated by the bonfires at Odo Oja area of the town, Fayose reportedly led armed policemen to the area to put the situation under control.

They should let the tree fight for itself now
There is a community in Kogi, the government did everything possible to bring down a man's house for construction reasons, up till now if you go there the reminant of condemn construction trucks are there all damaged beyond repair, the government had to let the house be and only recently they fenced the house for the owner. If truly the tree has powers it should fight for itself

But I am sure a lot of Christians and even Fayose don't see it like that. They are mocking these people because they see them as idol worshippers. If a church or mosque was involved, Fayose would have been forced to change plans. That was why I mentioned hypocrisy. True, infrastructure is needed but we must also go about it with caution and fairness. I am sure there are churches that should be demolished and are still standing. You can't tell me that all churches are part of the original city plan. They would overlook the churches and cut down things that other people (the minorities) hold dear to their hearts.

This thread has demonstrated the intolerance of supposed muslims and christians who are willingly supporting the government's plan to uproot the tree while disregarding the religious belief and the afinity of the local people of Ikerre.

Many countries in the world have sacred things, irrespective of their level of material and technological development. We must respect the rights of everyone, including indigenous peoples.

The Wailing Wall is a most sacred structure in Jerusalem and the entire Isreali Defence Forces with their American aillies can go to war to protect it. Meanwhile it is only a derelict piece of abandoned structure which is more than 2,000 years old.

The Grange river is most sacred in India, particularly during Diwhali. That country is even peculiar for sacredness as many of their regions have sacred cows, goats, monkeys and snakes!

Japan, Korea, Australia, China, Italy, Malaysia, Brazil, Turkey, USA etc all have had to re-design huge projects to accommodate local afinity to structures like old buildings, trees, rivers, rocks etc.

Fayoshe needs to respect Ikerre peoples as our christian and muslim brothers here too need to respect traditionalists. This is what a proper atheist should tell you guys.

The spirit of Olosunta has disappointed them. The rendevouz of witches and wizards must be removed for development sake. Mr. Governor , please invite all the traditionalists in that area to a meeting in government house at Ado Ekiti, treat them to good meals and merritent after the meeting, ensure your buldozer is on standby at Emure Ekiti. Simultaneously conduct the meeting and pulling down of stronghold of anti-development through your phone. Magana yakare.
