Its obvious that life is a cycle.
There was this job vacancy in my place of work and 8 people did apply for it which they were to be interviewed yesterday.

By privilege as an Admin/Acct Officer I was authorized by my HR who was engaged in a crucial meeting to conduct the interview on his behalf so far I know what the company requires.

Lo and behold among them was my secondary school Teacher who did teaching practice (TP) when I was in SS1.

We were both shocked when we saw each other, looking at each other, I smiled and said Sir kindly have a seat.

We gist for 30mnts then I used 5mnts to ask him where he worked before now, that's all.

Meanwhile, I recommended him OK for the job and asked him to come and start work tomorrow.

It is good to live peacefully with all men as you may not know where your turning table will stop next.
The question is, was that a dishonesty for me to have picked him as there were 2 people who had professional certification ahead of him?

Nairalanders over to you!

Hope you will agree with me that what you just did is exactly one of the reasons why Nigeria is so fuc.ked up starting from the day it was amalgamated till date?

Nepotism, religion, tribalism, online & offline scam, sycophancy and mediocrity are some of the terminal diseases Nigeria is currently suffering from and your actions only fastened it's dieing date.

Just look at the mess Nigeria is into as of today and the course of it is among the terminal diseases I listed above.

With all sense of humility and modesty, I once worked in an organization back then in Nigeria were I conducted series of interviews with over a thousand applications passing through my office desk and I came across lots of faces l knew but those that got the job were purely based on merits.

Good luck to your former teacher, hopefully he will repay your trust in him by giving his all to the job.

OP you've done well and God will surely reward you accordingly.

Av helped some people in such way as a school administrator.

Besides, early this year, God used me to help two of my FB friends to get jobs (Diamond Bank and NBC), but since then, no call or text message whatsoever, but I was fulfilled in my heart. And I didn't let that to stop me from helping ppl if I can.

Bro, don't be discourage by those ppl seeing your effort as unprofessional thing. God will surely reward you.

God has used you to help your teacher and you don't know where your children would be in future.

Keep doing the good work God has bestowed in your hands.

Stay blessed.

You did great bro, Kudos. Proffesional certification is merely added advantage, provided he had d minimum required qualification and he's trainable. Like we used to say in our Sec school days "seniority is not for ever"
he did great? How? What he did is so unprofessional

i only read your first 2 paragraph and decode your direction, i.e, unprofessional.

There's nothing unprofessional in what he did, in fact it's more professional than we think. Some organization employ these days based on referral, they prefer to employ someone who an existing staff can vouch for, rather than an untested fellow with almighty certification, hense d question "how did you know abt us" This is what d OP unknowningly did, d bottom line is, provided he has d minimum required qualification and skills. I had worked in an organization where nothing on earth would make them employ you if you don't know anyone within d Org. During interview, d 2nd question has always been "how did you know abt us" or "who introduced you to us" the person's name wld be written on the interview sheet in their(interviewers) hands, d rest is mere formalty, d job is yours. Failure to give a name, you are dawn with d interview.

u don't get sentimental into a job interview. U can write to the organisation and disqualify yourself from interviewing your relative. As judges in court disqualify themselves from judging their friends, family and relatives. They call it 'recluse'

Please I have a question. Who can one use as a referee on CV.
anyone gainfully employed. Some organisations, especially for scholarship applications, demand at least one lecturer from your university. And if you are working, one of your superior.
But you can't use your immediate relative for referee

it is very unprofessional. In this case, it is the interviewer conducting the interview.
You give every candidate equal opportunity. That's the essence of interview, after passing aptitude test.
Even though they say u can't enter NDA without knowing a General, I know those that entered there without knowing a corporal.
If I even tell u the name of my organisation and how I entered without even knowing a cleaner there, you wount believe.

Obviously, every other candidate failed even before the interview started.

The decision you took doesn't depict dishonesty in anyway . it is a favour based on the teacher-student relationship which you both had then. It is a way of showing gratitude. Professional certification is very important tho but in this scenario, you did the right thing .

You were unprofessional and corrupt.
You shouldn't have conducted the interview in the first place.
You knew him and ideally, you should've removed yourself from such situation. If he had done badly during the interview, he'd still expect you to do him favours by overlooking his weaknesses.

i have learnt my lesson the hard way. it will take centuries for Nigeria to make sense as a country . Your point is a valid one and that is the ideal thing to do. Nigeria is in a state of entropy , Nigeria is not ideal : why will I not favour someone i know. I am sure the two people with higher professional certification will do what the OP did if they were in the shoes of the OP. in a nutshell, why wasting time trying to change what is highly impossible to change.

Imagine that guy own scenario and someone here is saying it is unprofessional. Male I no swear give u o.

God didn't use him...

The problem with Nigerian "christianity" is that it is mostly false. A faith that is not based on the very principles of God Himself is simply empty. For what its worth, the bible is replete with admonishing us about honesty, letting our actions be above board etc.

An "interview" that consisted of 25 minutes of meaningless discussion and 5 minutes to ask him where he worked = to a job, even when there were clearly more qualified candidates? And these are the same people who would whine about how Nigeria is corrupt.

This is senseless. If this was the OP's private business, where he is free to hire whoever he wants, then perhaps you might have a point. His employer entrusted him with a responsibility based on trust (Proverbs 22:29)... even the bible asks us to be faithful in that which is another's before we can expect to receive that which is ours (Luke 16:12).

The OP has no right to use another man's business as a way to show "gratitude" or grant "favor" to another. His story is the reason Nigeria is in a complete nosedive. What is worse is that we have learnt to couch our corruption in the name of "God".
