Nigeria Can Generate 123,000mw Withenergy Mix In 2020 – Ecn by Nobody: 7:01am On Feb 04, 2010 |
The Energy Commission of Nigeria has projected that Nigeria can generate above 123,000 mega watts in 2020 at an ambitious 13 per cent economic growth rate if it takes advantage of varied energy mix. This means that if the country maximises a mix of coal, gas, hydro, nuclear, solar and wind energy sources, it will be able to generate 123, 049MW at 13 per cent growth rate and 80,897.6MW at seven per cent growth rate in 2020. According to a document signed by the Director General of the commission, Professor Abubakar Sambo, made available to our correspondent, by 2020, at 13 per cent economic growth rate, the country can generate 16, 956MW from coal, 70, 676.6 from gas, 16,681.1 MW from hydro, 12, 960MW from nuclear, 110.4MW from small hydro, 120.9MW from solar, and 3, 524.5MW from wind. At seven per cent economic growth rate, Nigeria can generate 10,500.9 MW from coal, 50,942.2MW from gas, 18,006.3MW from hydro, 1, 239.2MW from small hydro, 10.4MW from solar and 198.6MW from wind, Power generation, according to the ECN, can reach 107, 229.2MW in 2025 and 141, 239.5MW in 2030 at seven per cent economic growth rate. It can reach 149,606MW in 2025 and 382, 370 MW in 2030 at an ambitious 13 per cent growth rate. Experts, however, said it was too ambitious for a country that could not generate 6,000MW target in twelve months. They said it was better that they were mere projections on paper because it could not be achieved practical terms. The commission also said that the Federal Government would have to invest a whopping sum of $484bn in the power sector over a period of 25 years to achieve the Millennium Development Goals. It said at an optimistic 13 per cent Gross Domestic Product growth rate in Nigeria, energy demand projections rose from 5, 745 mega watts in 2005 to 297,900MW in 2030. For any serious sustainable development that will drive Vision 2020 and the MDGs, an average of $80.77bn must be invested every five years within the 25 year period. Sambo said, ”For the 13 per cent GDP growth rate the demand projections rose from 5,746MW in the base year of 2005 to 297, 900 MW in the year 2030 which translates to construction of 11, 686MW every year to meet the demand.” ”The corresponding cumulative investment cost (investment and operations and maintenance cost) for the 25 year period is $484.62bn, which means investing $ 80.77bn every five years within the period.” Sambo noted failure to attain 6,000MW would further hinder the achievement of the MDGs, adding that a large proportion of the Nigerian population would still be without electricity even if the target was achieved. He said, ”Even if we are able to achieve these goals a large proportion of the population of the country of 140 million people will still be without electricity. The targets are grossly inadequate when viewed from the backdrop of the power Projected by the ECN, based on International Atomic Energy Agency models which have been used by both developed and developing countries.” ”The ECN projects a national power demand of about 16,000MW by 2010, 51,000 MW by 2020, and 120,000MW by 2030 for the economic growth rate of 7 per cent required for the country to attain the Millennium Development Goals as stated in the National Economic Empowerment and Development Strategy in order to reduce the level of poverty by half by 2015.” Sambo further noted that with a targeted capacity of 10,000MW by December 2010 by the present administration, a new generation capacity of between 70,000MW and 113,000MW must be added to the system between 2010 and 2020. ”A generation capacity of 23,334MW - 37, 667MW must be put in place within every 3-year plan,” he said. He also said that associated transmission and distribution facilities needed to be put in place by year 2020 to achieve the MDGs and Vision 2020. The ECN had also proposed the plan to power the 36 state capitals with emergency diesel generators to augment supply from the national grid. http://www.punchontheweb.com/Articl.aspx?theartic=Art201002042212377 |

That deadline for the issuance of another bogus promise of electricity for Nigeria should be pushed back to 2099, just to be on the safe side, and to silence those enemies of progress who think that they deserve electricity sooner. |

If we can do that we will be exporting energy. But let us get 6000mW first. |
