Because of Ikere Gorge Dam!

The Ikere Gorge Dam is a major dam in Iseyin local government area of Oyo State in the south west of Nigeria on the Ogun River. Reservoir capacity is 690 million m3. The dam was initiated by the military regime of General Olusegun Obasanjo and started in 1983 by the administration of Shehu Shagari. The dam was planned to generate 3,750 MW of electricity, to supply water to local communities and to Lagos and to irrigate 12,000 hectares of land. Built in 1982/1983, work on the dam was abandoned by subsequent military governments. A report for the UN in 2004 said that no irrigation had taken place so far, but efforts were being made to implement one of the five planned irrigation projects. The project was based on the sprinkler system which is difficult to manage and requires that the farmers be trained.

Thirty-one years after the Federal Government imported a complete set of dam turbines for Ikere Gorge Dam, through the Ogun-Osun River Basin Development Authority, to generate electricity, the plant is yet to be utilised for that purpose.

The dam area is said to cover about 47 kilometres when measured as at 1980, but this figure according to investigation could be higher now because of neglect and the possibility of natural flooding around the river region since then.

The Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Chief Audu Ogbeh, on Tuesday regretted the moribund state of Ikere Gorge Dam in Iseyin, Oyo State.
The minister said he almost shed tears when he again visited the dam to see how the items are still lying fallow till date.

Mr. Oke went on to compare Ikere Gorge Dam with Akosombo Dam in Ghana. Both are natural dams. But while “the water level at Ikere Gorge Dam is 38 metres deep, Akosombo Dam is 36 metres.” Greater depth means greater capacity. And “if Akosombo Dam could produce 1,200 megawatts of electricity, Ikere Gorge Dam could do something similar or even better.” One might also add that if Ikere Gorge Dam had 10,000 herds of cattle in a ranch in 1966, as Mr. Oke confirmed, we have a home-grown answer to free range cattle rearing with its unsavoury consequences. And just as Akosombo Dam has turned into a tourist attraction earning enviable foreign exchange for Ghana’s economy, so can Ikere Gorge Dam do for Nigeria’s.

CONCLUSION
This paper has assessed the potentials of Ikere Gorge Dam towards transforming Oke Ogun region for an improved
or better one. This dam is expected to have considerate impacts on the people of Oke Ogun. The impacts which
should be felt in the areas of economic, social and spatial as a result of the activities of the dam have not been
manifested due to the non utilization of the dam. Therefore, if the following recommendations could be followed, no
doubt, there would be better economic, social and physical transformation in Oke Ogun Region, Oyo State and
Nigeria as a whole.
Recommendations
 The fishing potentialities: Modification of the existing technologies will lead to fully tapping of this
potential. Introduction of new types of fishing boats, preservation methods, and new devices to catch fishes will
improve their productivity and higher income will be the result.
 Irrigated agriculture: Apart from fishing, the potential for irrigable land has been put at 3,500 hectares.
There should be investigation on the range of crops which are likely to be proved most profitable. This will go a
long way in transforming Oke Ogun region.
 Tourism: Prospects for a thriving tourist industry are seen to be considerable in terms of both the
activities on the lake itself and the setting of the environment. As Kainji lake has the advantage of the nearby Borgu
Game Reserve so also Ikere Lake has Owu Game Reserve at its north western part. In fact, the potential is both
feasible and viable.
