Ekiti to screen urine, saliva, stool of butchers *To prevent transmission of diseases

THE Ekiti State government has said it will soon begin to screen the urine, saliva and stool of all butchers operating in the state as a measure to contain spread of diseases through meat consumption. The government also warned butchers and those who engaged in selling of meat in the state to guard against spreading diseases through unhygienic activities, while it also announced the closure of five abattoirs in the state over failure to comply with government's orders.

The state Commissioner for Environment, Chief Segun Olanrewaju, disclosed this on Tuesday, at a meeting with Hausa butchers in his office, saying that the state government had also given one month ultimatum to butchers in the state to get befitting uniforms or face sanctions.

"Open display of meat is no longer allowed. It is also necessary to inform you that in a bid to enhance the general well-being of the people of the state, soon, we are going to take the samples of urine, saliva and stool of butchers operating in the state for screening so as to avoid transmission of diseases," he said.

Reminding stakeholders in the meat sector of the order of the state government that illegal abattoirs should cease to function in the state, Olanrewaju said the government's task force on sanitation had closed three abattoirs in Ado-Ekiti and two in Ikere-Ekiti.

Chief Olanrewaju said since diseases had no ethnic or religious colouration, all citizens needed to ensure overall cleanliness of the state and, more importantly, give hygiene a priority.

nice move but more importantly, they have to ensure general sanitation of the abattoirs and those that work there. all they need is spme enlightenment.
