To be honest with you Lars Lagerbeer (now I dub him Uncle L or Uncle LL  ) would have been my choice.
My reason: I think he may be able to instil discipline into them players.

It is really sad that we dont believe in ourselves. This Lagerback guy failed to qualify sweden for the world cup and we have now hired him. At the last world cup, Ghana failed to qualify from the group stages of the nations cup and they ended up becoming the best African team at the world cup. The Nigerian team at the last Nations cup might have dissapointed, but anytime they play against european teams, they alway rise up to the occassion. The Nigeria team under Amodu have been solid but not entertaining and that is what all the world cup winners since 1990 have in common.
What have happened to Amodu in football would most certainly continue to happen in other professions and we will most certainly continue to be backward e.g. Banks been sold to foreign owners, companies making use of simple software applications when they can get ok ones here, doing simple printing jobs abroad etc. The list is endless.
I want anybody to tell me based on the present performance the difference btw capello and amodu. Capello qualified the english team 4 the world cup but he has failed to win spain, germany and france( a team nigeria defeated with second string players under amodu), or someone should tell me the difference between amodu and the french coach and the man still has his job. You can alway point to their previous achievement but given the same opportunity they have in europe are we sure that amodu wont perform has they have done.

the truth is that there is a difference between coaches.

are u telling me in your heart of hearts that it was amodu's technical input that took us to the quaterfinals of the nations cup? pleeeaaassseeee, oga, it was  the individual qualities if the players that carried us so far.

by the way, there is light years difference, in class, pedigree btw capello and amodu (dont ever ever try making comparisons between the two).

if you see a team that is well ccoached, you will know.


as far as am concerned amodu has not earned his badges.

I trust you will find (as always) some posters who will throw logic into the wind and expect this beer-affiliated coach to take SE through to the Finals of SA2010. At best he will just be a fresh wind of change. nothing to turn Yobo into a purposeful pillar of defence or Shittu into a fast defender nor Yakubu into a fit youngster or Kanu into a prolific striker. such are our expectations but we failt to see how close we are and the fact that NFF is still in charge. we shall see Nwaneri play ahead of Odia, Yakubu ahead of, and so forth,

ABUJA (AFP) - Swede Lars Lagerback, has been named as Nigeria's coach on a five-month contract through until the World Cup in South Africa, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) announced on Saturday.

The 61-year-old was interviewed on Friday and named after a meeting of the NFF board here early Saturday.

He takes over from Shuaibu Amodu, who was sacked after Nigeria lost 1-0 to Ghana in the Africa Cup of Nations semi-finals last month.

Lagerback began work with the Sweden Football Association in 1990, concentrating on the the country's junior teams.

In 1996, he took over the Sweden B team and stayed there until 1998 when Tommy Soderberg took him on as assistant coach for Sweden.

In 2000, he was promoted to the position of joint-coach, a responsibility he would share with Soderberg until 2004.

Under his guidance, Sweden qualified for Euro 2000, but lost in the group stages. In 2002, he led Sweden to the World Cup, where they lost to Senegal.

Sweden then qualified for Euro 2004 reaching the quarterfinals where they lost to the Netherlands and two years later Lagerback took Sweden to their fourth consecutive championship, the first time in their history.

Under Lagerback Sweden also qualified for Euro 2008 where they were eliminated in the group stage after losing 2-0 to Russia.

Lagerback resigned after failing to qualify Sweden for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa where Nigeria have been grouped with Argentina, Greece and South Korea.[b][/b]

Lagerback to be unveiled Wednesday

Lars Lagerback is expected to be officially unveiled at a media conference on Wednesday, just before the friendly international against Democratic Republic of Congo in Abuja.

The Swede will remain in Abuja to complete negotiations on the final details of his contract and is expected to sign the deal early next week before his midweek unveiling.

The NFF have proposed three local assistants for him in Austin Eguavoen, Daniel Amokachi and Alloy Agu.

Lagerback has, however, proposed to bring in three of his own backroom staff – one assistant coach, one physical trainer and one scout.

Meanwhile, a top official of the NFF has told KickOffNigeria.com that Lagerback was only offered an initial five-month contract until August because his wages will be paid by the Presidential Task Force, which will cease to exist after that time.

“The PTF will be responsible for the wages of the new coach, and their job will end in August after the World Cup. From that point on, it is the NFF that will take up the responsibility for paying the coach and it will be up to us to decide whether we want to keep him or not, depending on our performance at the World Cup.”

NFF Executive Committee member Taiwo Ogunjobi added that if the Glass House were suitably impressed by Lagerback, he would be offered a minimum two-year deal.

“We hope that he will do very well. If he does, we will not give him anything less than a two-year contract,” Ogunjobi told KickOffNigeria.com.

The PTF was set up by Nigeria President Umaru Musa Yaradua to help secure World Cup qualification and prepare the team for the tournament and their brief will end after the World Cup.

Discipline or not, his days as Head coach are already numbered. With our current crop of players and the time outstanding for preparation before the world cup, I fail to see how he'll meet his quota + his track record is without silverware.

The Swede’s contract will be for an initial five months and he will be expected to deliver at least a semi-final finish at the World Cup in South Africa.

The guy is an average coach.In the world cup qualifiers,in a group made up of denmark,sweden,hungary,albania and malta.He could only reach the third position,he was thrashed both home and away against denmark.He drew both home and away against portugal.I believe he is better than Amodu 100%
