Northern governors’ plot against Jonathan fails

A plot by some northern governors to portray the Acting President, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, as being anti-north was on Thursday foiled in Abuja.

reliably gathered that some governors from the north had met secretly in Asokoro District over the alleged suspension of the dredging of River Niger by Jonathan.

Following a meeting with some Niger Delta governors, the Acting President had on Tuesday approved the transfer of N19 billion out of the N36 billion special intervention funds for the dredging of River Niger to shore line protection and land reclamation in the Niger Delta.

It was gathered that the decision of the Acting President was capitalised upon by some northern governors to launch a campaign of calumny against Jonathan.

It was learnt that a member of the kitchen cabinet of President Umaru Yar’Adua, who attended the session, had tried to persuade the governors to resist what was carefully packaged as an anti-north policy, but most of those in attendance called for caution.

A source added: "Some governors opted for dialogue with the Acting President to resolve any complaint. They warned against any plot to destabilise the administration of Jonathan.

"Also, a few governors at the meeting allegedly leaked the plot to the Acting President who also took time to clarify the situation to key figures in the north.

"Jonathan also explained that the dredging of River Niger has not been suspended as being widely insinuated. That was how the plot was foiled.

"I think in the next few weeks, the Acting President will take time to embark on confidence building with northern leaders."

Meanwhile, despite the return of President Umaru Yar’Adua, there were strong indications yesterday that members of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) are still under pressure to invoke Section144 of the1999 Constitution to determine the President’s state of health.

It was also learnt that most ministers are angry that they have no access to the President not to talk of knowing his condition.
