It is becoming increasingly disturbing to observe that the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), whilst expressing their rights of freedom of expression, movement and association, as provided for in the 1999 Nigerian Constitution (as amended), have without provocation continued to scratch the sensibilities of the peaceful people of Rivers State.

When they are not demonstrating and protesting on the streets, they are celebrating the electoral victory of a faraway American President or planning to host the World Igbo Congress in Port Harcourt.

Latest is the unprovoked attack on some law-abiding residents of the ever busy city of Oyigbo, located at the boundary of Rivers and Abia States. In the process, businesses were disrupted, houses and shops were burnt and from available records, two or three people were killed. What is the meaning of all these? Definitely, this is not the way to self-determination or secession.

For the avoidance of all doubts, Rivers State has never and will never be part of their dream Biafra Republic. In expressing their desire, they must restrict themselves to the confines of the South-East Zone and the Nigerian Constitution.

There is an age-long Ikwerre adage that says, "He who wants to be mad, should be mad in his own home". The boundaries of the states of the Federation are clearly defined by the Nigerian Constitution.

As neighbours, we have enjoyed unparalleled peace and respected each other over the years. The continued disrespect shown to the citizens of Rivers State by the activities of IPOB, seems to indicate that our mutual respect for peaceful co-existence as neighbours is now being taken for granted by a handful of youths who do not enjoy the full support of the well-meaning citizens of the South-East Zone and indeed Abia State.

Some of us witnessed the gory and despicable scenes of the last Nigerian Civil War (1967-70), and so we would not wish the present generation of citizens to experience same.

Wholeheartedly, I endorse the statemanly broadcast of the Governor of Abia State, Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu, when he said, "The Abia State Government unequivocally states that Abia is a component State of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and subscribes to the supremacy of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and all other extant laws". We should therefore respect the individuality of States of the Federation and their citizens. A stitch in time saves nine.

Andrew Uchendu, OON,
Senator-elect representing Rivers East Senatorial District.

September 14, 2017.

Personally, I dont believe Senator Uchendu wrote this because the whole write up sounds childish.

It talks about demonstrating on the streets and celebrating Trump. How is it a senators business what or whose Presidency IPOB chooses to celebrate?

The World Igbo congress has been held in London, it has been held several times in America, but a Senator is complaining about it being held in Portharcourt?

Then he talks about Obigbo, has he investigated what brought about the problem in Obigbo? IPOB just got up one morning and started attacking people? Something they have never been known to do? Who was doing all the shooting in Obigbo? Was it IPOB?

But the funny part of of the letter is that the Senator while aknowleging the right of IPOB to peaceful agitation now turns around to tell IPOB where their agitation is confined to. He now goes on to appoint himself speaker of all the ethnic groups in Rivers by saying what Rivers people will be and what they will not be.

I find it hard to believe that a Senator would write something so childish as this so if it is actually from him, it is regrettable.

Truth is that Oyigbo is a 100% Igbo town under Aba district but closer to Port Harcourt. The ethnic groups are Asa and Ndoki whom 90% live in Abia and 10% in Rivers. The 1st Ikwerre village is Iriebe and that's where development starts as Oyigbo has been completely neglected by both federal and State governments.

Rivers State however is not Biafra and till this day the bitter memories of the war has kept Igbo trust issue on suspect list of most Rivers people.

He is a Senator with a constituency and from a state where his representation is recognised by the constitution.

Who made Kanu a representative of even his local government?

The people of Oyigbo (Asa and Ndoki) are Igbos, and are not indigenous to the land and grounds they now occupy in Oyigbo local government area. They are clearly migrants who crossed the IMO river from Abia into Rivers state.

It is not debatable as over 90% of their Kith and Kin are in Abia states.

Migrants in Rivers should not be disturbing us.
