The appointment of a 25-member Presidential Advisory Council (PAC) by Acting President Goodluck Jonathan without first consulting the governors is the major reason why the Governors’ Forum frustrated Jonathan’s acquisition of real power. At the meeting held at the acting president’s residence, last Tuesday, ahead of last weeks Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting, the Governors’ Forum had delivered to Jonathan a number of orders that effectively changed his status from a hopeful substantive president to a lame duck acting president to Yar’Adua.

[b]During a fiery meeting, according to an online news agency, the governors accused Jonathan of selecting men and women who are “paperweight” in their various states. Above all, they said Jonathan overreached himself by appointing such a powerful committee with a northern Christian and southern Christian as chairman and deputy chairman of PAC. They also asked Jonathan to shelve the plan to invoke Section 144 of the constitution at last Wednesday’s FEC meeting, insisting that Yar’Adua should continue as president while Jonathan should remain “acting president.”

Sources said that Jonathan looked dazed and helpless and was “especially stunned when the governor of his home state, Timipre Sylva, became very vocal and confrontational at the meeting”.

“The governors effectively stripped Jonathan of most of his powers to take presidential decisions,” said a source close to one of the governors. He added: “They have also restored the presidency to an unseen and unwell Yar’Adua.”

“It’s a victory for Turai Yar’adua who will wield those powers on behalf of her sick husband,” a diplomatic said. “It’s a sad reversal for Nigerians and one hopes that it’s only a temporary setback.” [/b]

The governors’ move to checkmate Jonathan has been described as an “expedient volte-face driven by greed and avarice.” A few weeks ago, the same state governors boosted Jonathan’s path to presidential power when they met and decided that Yar’Adua’s prolonged absence from Nigeria was overheating the system. The leader of the group, Bukola Saraki, was particularly miffed that he was rebuffed when he visited Saudi Arabia a few days after Yar’Adua was evacuated from Nigeria on medical emergency. On his return to Nigeria, Saraki used his father to push a series of campaign against Yar’Adua through his “Northern Union” pressure group.

Seeing an opportunity for his own political advancement, Bukola Saraki it was alleged reached out to Jonathan to ask for the position of vice president. He promised that once Jonathan offered him the position, he would activate his contacts in the National Assembly to impeach Yar’Adua after declaring him incapacitated. Sources said that Jonathan declined to designate Bukola Saraki as the vice president.

Saraki and other governors then set their eyes on the “Excess Crude Accounts.” For weeks, Jonathan had declined to sign, stating that he lacked the requisite constitutional authority to release the funds.

How in the world can governors dictate to Johnathan what powers he has and doesn't have?

This is all so confusing Jonathan should have the upper hand He really needs to stop getting pushed around and intimidated. He needs to take some kind of bold action that would put some fear in the eyes of these governors so that they won't do and say as they see fit.

Governors are immune to any prosecution, so they can misbehave. They are like gods (albeit, corrupt ones) who control a bunch of reps that can be used as an impeachment weapon. The whole constituition is worthless.

Jonathan can get them by not releasing their monthly stipend, so their "victory" is pyrrhic.

So we can c there were plans 4 Jonathan 2 bcom president. This is just a temporary victory Jonathan knows how to hold these govs to ransom very soon this same govs wld beg 4 Jonathan 2 rule. The govs can talk rant and threaten but even if they hav 2 go via impeachment procedings they wld at least need alegations nd substantive evidence.

nigeria needs a total system cleansing. virtually all the government office holders are crooked and could care less about how the nation is doing just as long as they can loot money. I wonder just what do they do with all this money they steal besides send their children and family overseas and ride big cars. This is greediness to the extreme.
