Lawmaker Seeks Suspension Of Plateau From Nysc Scheme by pheesayor(m): 1:34pm On Mar 10, 2010
The Minority Leader of the Ondo State House of Assembly, Ifedayo Akinsoyinu has faulted the continued posting of youth corps members to Jos, the capital of Plateau State.

The Lawmaker, who spoke with reporters at the assembly complex yesterday in Akure, said it was totally wrong for the managers of the scheme to post fresh graduates to the troubled state knowing full well that there have been violent crisis in the area in the past 10 years.

“It is criminal for the National Youth Service Corps to post people to the troubled zone when the area is noted for crisis. We all living witnesses to how youth corps members have been the target of these crises in Jos,” he said.

Mr. Akinsoyinu said corps members posted to the area always passed through untold hardship, lamenting that some corps members were still missing after the January 17 crisis that broke out in Jos.

“I think the NYSC scheme is no longer relevant in this country, the programme was created after the civil war to integrate the various ethnic groups in the country. But now that the civil war is over, we don’t need any more integration,” he said.

Unhelpful government

The lawmaker also blamed the federal government for not finding a lasting solution to the Jos crisis, saying government has failed in its duty of providing adequate security for its citizenry.

Mr Akinsoyinu, who is representing Ondo West in the state Assembly, said for crisis to cease in Jos, the federal government must make sure that all the people that are involved in fanning the embers of crisis in the area are brought to book.

“The crisis in Jos is fast becoming too many, government must brace up and get to the root of the matter. There are many people who are fuelling the crisis that should be brought to book,” he said. “Some cabals are behind the crisis, and it is only when these cabals are probed that Jos will enjoy peace.” He also disagreed with the people calling for the imposition of state of emergency in the troubled state, saying, “state of emergency will not bringing solution to the crisis. Since there is no external influence in the crisis rocking the area, government will only be wasting time by imposing state of emergency in Plateau. It is their leaders that are causing problem in the area,” he said.
