So I had a conversation with an Airtel NG customer care agent about unauthorized deductions on my account since that has been a recurring event with the company. The agent just told me there was a WAS** (didn't catch the rest of the crap name she called out to me) service active on my phone and that's the reason for the deductions. I told her I never subscribed for the service. All she did was ask me whether she should deactivate the service on my line. Meanwhile there's been no message sent to me to indicate the reasons for the deductions or to even acknowledge such deductions were made. So when I decided to investigate further, she just thanked me for using Airtel and hung up. These are my observations thus far: (1) Nigeria is too big a nation with a largest market for multinational Telecom companies to play chicken with its customers who make up it's profit base. But in Nigeria, the customers are treated like shit by these errant companies and the customer care agents that work for them. These Telcos ought to have been put in their place by the NCC but the greed and selfish interests of some working at the NCC has made it nearly impossible to properly check the activities of these Telcos and punish those who engage in commercial malpractice. (2) These Telcos are stealing from us and have been doing so sometime now and there's been little to no effort to curb this practice. Reasons include the NCC not properly sensitizing the consumers on their Rights protection and/or taking previous reports seriously, consumers not standing up for themselves and forcing these Telcos to give us a better deal (a people that have been enslaved for so long by their own government will hardly complain about smaller abuses by other masters, right?) and as such these Telcos now feel they are doing is a favour by providing their services when it's actually the other way around, complicity of government regulatory agencies either through negligence (incompetence) or selfish greed (corruption) which emboldens these Telcos to do as they please. We see similar instances in the Petroleum industry too. I think it's high time we put them in their proper place. We have to do something about these inhumane and disrespectful treatments meted out on us by these Telcos. Imagine a customer care agent hanging up on me after just 112 seconds of interaction simply because I asked to know why my money is being taken away from me without proper notification or for good reason? Nigerians, very soon banks and other corporate bodies will join this bandwagon of corporate rascality that the PetCos and Telcos are already on. Why is it that Human Rights protection and punishment of violations is not taken seriously in this country? Are cursed, never grow as a nation for real? TUFIAKWA!!! Open your eyes and let's join hands to protect ourselves from corporate exploitation. I rest my case! |

Nigeria has a government parastatal that's called Consumer Protection Council (CPC). It deals with issues like the one you relayed+any other complaints related to nonsense services, whether by public or private bodies. Relay such issues to them. Believe me, those errant bodies can actually land in serious trouble. It's because many nigerians are not aware of the existence of such a parastatal and even those of us that are aware, we just let things go by and decide not to take things up and make issues. |

I have come to understand something, governments, telecos, petcos, etc are corporations or corporate entities and operate under commercial law which is devoid of morality or any human feelings... |
