This is to clarify the issue of Uneme. The reason people of that tribe hide their identity is because of negative attitudes of fellow Edo people, who do not relate with them positively, because of their involvement in the slavish penetrations of the whites into Edo land. I do not wish to explain further. Your Uneme kindreds would be able to do that in clearer terms. Uneme people do not hold their head-high to proclaim whom they are, rather, they claim different lingua like Yoruba, Etsako and other clans in Edo State. They would rather speak other dialects than the Uneme. In the past, contact with them is usually avoided, just like the Jews and the Samarians. |

Hey Gamine I was wondering do you guys hold Uneme town meetings or meetings in general? My ppl are not that many either but we hold yearly national get togethers all over the U.S. were we meet get to know each other and keep our culture alive and see what we can do for our ppl back home. Most other tribes do them too, I've been to a couple of enugu/anabra/ogoni meetings here in texas. By the way it's great you are concerned I'm sure if you are worrying about it there must be other Uneme ppl that are concerned too. |

It seems most uneme people are afraid their tribe will die out but are not willing to do something about it. If you are not willing to attend or organize a meeting of uneme people am afraid the end is nigh. A search on google took me to the BBC and (yes you got it right) there was an uneme person lamenting the imminent extinction of uneme. Which local govt area does uneme fall under? I would advice your people to inter marry with people from say Agenegbode,Auchi,Igarra or Ora people, because your culture are near enough the same. |
Re: Uneme: My Tribe, IS NOT Going Extinct ANYMORE! by abdkabir(m): 12:32am On Apr 07, 2007 |
Why not intermarry with the Yorubas or the Japanese (www.uneme.com) so as to preserve the language in the diaspora. |

Gamine, I couldn't be wrong. I am absolutely right. I am from Akoko-Edo and know the history. The Unemes with their craftmanship in steel technology as at then, manufactured chains with which slaves where taken away by the colonial invaders for financial gains. This resulted in their being excommunicated. The tribe is now scattered around Edo State and could be found in Akoko-Edo (Uneme-Nokua, Uneme-Osu, etc), Etsako, Owan, etc. The Binis call them Uleme. Akoko-Edo has the largest settlement of the Unemes. This is just a brief history. If you need details, I could go down history memory-lane and dig up facts and link you up with your kindreds with high political status in Edo State. Inter-marriage could only be done if the Uneme identity is unknown to others (friends and family members). A forum was recently launched in Edo State to correct this age-long segregation, This cannot work, because the fact remains that modernity cannot out-run inherited norms and values. It is deep rooted and will take generations to wash aways, excepting the story is untold to the new generations, which is rapidly not associating with the traditional tenets of their ancestors. I know about this history because I grew up at home in my village. How could I tell my child/children the same history, unless the issue is awakened by happennings. |

Hello Gamine, I am not sure if you have come across this book written by Hakeem B. Harunah but it is called : A cultural History of the Uneme From the Earliest Times to 1962. I happen to be Uneme too and my dad gave me a copy. Hakeem Harunah did a good job of capturing the Uneme History. You can purchase a copy online for a little over 50 dollars or read it at a local bookstore that has it. |

The decline of the Edo kingdom began when the british besieged and destroyed it sometime in the 1800's, i think in the 1860's to be precise. 1 Like |
